  • Pierogies Plus
As Pierogies Plus's chefs filter into the kitchen early each morning, they peek at the vast pot of potatoes they left to boil overnight, making sure each spud is tender and ready to tuck inside their signature dumplings. The multigenerational kitchen staff?some of whom have been making pierogies for four, five, or seven decades?roll out rounds of dough and top them with sauerkraut, kielbasa, potatoes, and other fillings, following a special recipe espoused by Food Network chef Bobby Flay. Then chefs center each dollop of filling, hand pinch the pierogies into scallop-edged crescents until they cry uncle, and cook them until the dough turns golden. Pierogies Plus dishes out its eponymous treats and other Eastern European dishes both in its McKees Rocks storefront and in an online store, and caters special events, such as graduation parties and weddings.

  • Noshes and Nibbles
As a girl, April Gabriel watched her mother and grandmother spend countless hours cooking and entertaining. Her fascination with their activities sparked her desire to delve into the culinary world. After earning her chops in positions including server and prep chef for an Italian restaurant in northern Pennsylvania, she took the leap in 2010 and opened her own catering company, Noshes and Nibbles. Bringing more than 15 years of experience in the restaurant industry with her, April laid the foundation of her company with her passion for crafting artistic, elegant dishes from scratch. Together with a team of skilled chefs, she forms edible masterpieces for events such as business luncheons, dinner parties, and anniversaries of the first time a spouse forgot an anniversary, tailoring menus to fit individual tastes and vegetarian diets. The menus span the daily triumvirate of meals, with breakfast options ranging from a classic continental spread of juice and muffins to savory buffets. At lunch, Noshes and Nibbles serves up sandwiches stuffed with veggies and hummus or roast beef to complement mounds of homemade potato salad. April and her staff really flaunt their culinary prowess in the evening, when dinnertime hors d'oeuvres such as poached salmon and eggplant tartines marshal a gustatory parade of entrees including Tennessee whiskey-braised ribs, chicken milanese, and halibut. Dinner entrees, which come à la carte or buffet-style, can be purchased over the phone or via singing telegram.

  • Reading Fightin Phils vs Harrisburg Senators
The Fightin Phils have served as the Double-A affiliate for the Philadelphia Phillies since 1967, forging the longest-running affiliate partnership in baseball, not counting the ancient business relationship between groundskeepers and chalk purveyors. Many Phillies stars have matriculated through the Fightin Phils clubhouse and made contributions to the Phillies' World Series wins in 1980 and 2008. The Phils have also enjoyed their own share of sandlot glory, seizing Eastern League titles in 1968, 1973, 1995, and 2001. Built in 1951, the team's stadium, FirstEnergy Stadium, serves as the oldest home field in the Eastern League. Along with a lineup of characters featuring a frog, dog, and bear, the Fightin Phils' mascots include a pair of live ostriches and the Crazy Hot Dog Vendor?a striped-vested madman astride his faithful ostrich Rodrigo, who runs around the infield as the Vendor throws souvenirs into the stands.
