Water, foam, and shrink-wrap. Though it sounds like the set for an offbeat shampoo commercial, it’s the L.I. Adventure Race. The challenging 5K mud run boasts an array of obstacles that involves everything from heaps of dirt to its archenemy, soap. After runners tackle the course obstructions and sprint to the finish line caked in mud, members from the local fire company will be on hand to hose them off.

Whether you like your zombies lurching like in Romero's original Night of the Living Dead, or hurtling towards you with bloodshot eyes ala 28 Days Later, Zombie X Festival has something for you. Created by lovers of the undead for lovers of brain-chomping hijinks, the festival treats horror fans to an entire day of entrail-eating fun. Find out what to expect from this night of the living dead.
The Music: A slate of terror-loving rockers unearth a spooky soundtrack, with a headlining performance from Michale Graves, formerly of the horrorpunk progenitors The Misfits.
The Performers and action: Tribal Dance Long Island taunts zombies with belly dances, while Hoopsie Daisies ward off zombies with fire dances and Madame Reaper entrances them with her burlesque. In addition to contests and prizes for best zombie costumes, the fest features interactive experiences such as a Zombie Survival Training course, a thrilling game of Zombie Paintball Survival.
The Movies: Writer/director Mark Allen Stuart screens a series of his gory short films, including Zombie, the alleged sequel Zombies, and Half Human, all featuring rocker/actor Michale Graves who joins the director for a Q&A session. After this session, a collection of other zombie short film submissions will also be screened.
The Rest: The festival also features a beer garden and vendors galore.
Don't let them touch you. If they touch you, you're done for. At The Zombie Run, the only way to beat the undead is to run as fast as you can—or give in and join them. This 5K and 15K race, littered with challenging obstacles, pits competitors against a hoard of zombies. The survivors wear three health flags, and if the zombies nab all three, they turn into zombies themselves. However, you can choose to start the race as a zombie, and everyone will look the part, too, thanks to professional zombie makeup artists who await on the sidelines.
Runners who make it to the end of the course with at least one flag successfully survive the zombie apocalypse. Once the carnage is over, everyone can shed their former identities for an after party complete with barbecue, live entertainment, and finisher medals.
