  • Events Center
In 1931, aviation legends such as Howard Hughes and Amelia Earhart traversed the hallowed halls of Floyd Bennett Field, New York City's first municipal airport. Today, the same site harbors Aviator Sports and Events Center, which accommodates recreation in all of its forms, equipped with 20,000 square foot indoor field house, which includes newly resurfaced hardwood courts and new turf field, two outdoor synthetic-turf fields, and an outdoor space for events that can seat up to 4,000 people?the same number of people it takes to crack open a life-size Big Bird pi?ata. Twin NHL-regulation rinks host open-skate sessions, a majority of which are held on Rink B, every day of the week, with skates as late as 11 p.m. on weekends. Inside the center is a brand new CrossFit gym, which offers workout classes Monday through Saturday. Only youngsters enjoy summer or after-school camps, but adults and kids alike can take advantage of a roster of sports and leagues, including flag football and rock climbing, ideal for those looking to shorten morning commutes by cutting through the quarry.

  • Crossfit El Paso East
After spending years immersed in the fitness and athletic industries, Ernesto McLaurin and Kim Brutzman had grown weary of the monotonous exercise equipment found in large corporate gyms. On their search for a more substantial form of fitness free from bulky machines, the two trainers fell in love with the CrossFit program’s high-energy, functional-movement-based workout routines, eventually joining forces to form CrossFit El Paso in 2006. They stuff their Eastside and Westside locations with simple resistance-training equipment, free weights, and kettlebells, conducting CrossFit classes throughout the week with the help of certified instructors. In addition to leading rigorous CrossFit workouts, they provide students with nutritional guidance and host regular health seminars. They also offer a FemmeFit class, where women and male comedians in convincing makeup can practice CrossFit workouts specifically designed for the female body.

  • The Color Dash
Though some participants choose to run and others to walk, everybody who participates in the Color Dash experiences a transformation. As participants make their way through the 5K Color Dash and UVSplash courses they are subjected to bursts of color; additional events include the Bubble Bash by Color Dash and Zombies by Color Dash, which adds the undead to the equation. Though the color will wash away, the memories will remain forever in the minds of all participants who aren't goldfish. Proceeds from Color Dash events benefit local children's charities and organizations.

  • UV Splash Color Dash
Runners start the UV Splash Color Dash in white T-shirts, but by the end, they'll all be wearing the same colorful glow-in-the-dark uniform. As they traverse the 5K course, they'll be gently hit with splashes of UV-colored water. In the nighttime darkness?and under black lights that line the course?the colorful stains will glow, making the cavalcade of runners into a glowing, moving constellation. At the end of the race, each human painting can hang out and replenish in an post-dash celebration.

  • Healthy Fit Families Inc.
Unlike mud runs before it, the 5K course of the Recon Run is adorned with boot-camp-style obstacles such as piles of tires, muddy trenches, and walls that runners must jump, scramble, and pull themselves over. The military theme comes as no surprise; after all, proceeds from this charity race support the Semper Fi Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides financial support to injured and ill members of the US Armed Forces and their families. Upon completing the course, successful recruits earn T-shirts, dog tags, and beer that they can enjoy with fellow racers at the finish line.
