Select Local Merchants

  • Starring the Gallery
Mary Starring realized her goal of helping local artists step into the spotlight when she opened her gallery in 2005. Since then, Mary's space has featured the work of more than 50 talented creators, each showcased during Northville's First Friday Experience. This monthly after-hours collaboration by the town's merchants unites the community in appreciation of the work of these local artists. To further highlight this local talent, Starring populates her shelves with their art and gifts—elegant, locally blown glass, original paintings, and stylish jewelry. A regularly rotating selection of crafts helps returning customers find the perfect birthday present or replacement for a macaroni necklace they mistook for dinner.

  • University of Michigan Museum of Natural History
The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History showcases a wealth of knowledge about the living world with focus on anthropology, zoology, and paleontology. On the Museum's second floor, the hall of evolution houses fossils and dioramas of dinosaurs, prehistoric whales, and mastodons. On the third and fourth floors, a wildlife gallery explores Michigan's native flora and fauna through taxidermy mounts and habitat scenes, anthropology displays feature archeological finds from around the world, and geology exhibits highlight colorful amethyst clusters and sparkling pyrite crystals. The butterfly garden provides a living example of the natural world. Its 55 herbaceous perennials—including goldenrod, black-eyed Susan and spicebush—attract butterflies through all four of their life stages, from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to fully grown winged beauties. Extending its reach beyond the galaxy, the Museum's recently renovated planetarium projects the night sky on a dome. Sitting under the curved screen, visitors can travel to the most distant reaches of the universe. As part of its efforts to get families involved in hands-on learning, the Museum also runs weekend demonstrations, leads dinosaur tours, and partners with local libraries for its family reading and science program.

  • University of Michigan Museum of Art
One hundred fifty years in the making, the permanent collection at the University of Michigan Museum of Art now totals more than 19,000 pieces. Displayed throughout the museum's galleries, those collected masterpieces include canvases by Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, as well as a 1638 self-portrait by Rembrandt. Far from a narrow representation of the art world, the museum asks questions about the global nature of art by juxtaposing the aforementioned artists alongside African work, Indian bronzes, and Chinese ceramics. After exploring the museum's permanent and special exhibitions, visitors can decompress at the DialogTable. Not only does the interactive table show guests films about the art they've seen, but it can also answer the age-old question "what is being a table like?" To supplement its exhibits, the museum hosts numerous programs and events every year, ranging from student programming and a reading series to artist talks and art-making workshops. The artistic attractions even spill through the museum doors with seven sculptures surrounding the building.

  • Motawi Tileworks
To become a finished Motawi Tileworks tile, slabs of raw clay must run the gauntlet of an elaborate production line, where they'll be crushed under a 60-ton press, dipped or drizzled in colorful glaze, and fired in a kiln at 2,000 degrees. Though the handmade process lends itself to variations in colors, it creates uniformly durable tiles built to withstand the heat of a fireplace, the splashing of a kitchen sink, or the futility of existence atop a shelf. The company's artisans have handmade their tiles in Ann Arbor for two decades. They draw on this experience while creating three types of tiles: flat field, polychrome, and molded. Each catches eyes on its own, or transforms into an artful mosaic when mixed and matched. During the design process, the craftsmen draw inspiration from a huge range of American influences, from Native American artists to Frank Lloyd Wright.

  • Glass Shack Studio
The sunlight streaming through Glass Shack Studio's second-story windows sets shards of stained glass ablaze in a rainbow of hues, sending glints of colored light dancing across crafting tables. Shaped by specialized cutting tools and anchored by grout, these glass pieces will eventually form colorful mosaics like those displayed on the studio's chartreuse walls, which double as a gallery for local artisans. During workshops and classes, owner and founder Haley Alcock calls on her background in elementary and middle-school education to swiftly explicate the nearly 3,500-year-old art form, teaching students to assemble glittering landscapes, abstract designs, and portraits of their favorite light bulbs.
