  • YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh
The YMCA Adventure Warrior Race gives kids and adults a chance to prove themselves against ropes courses, mud, water obstacles, and other unexpected mental and physical challenges—all while supporting a good cause. Amid the breathtaking views and tranquil waters of Lake Tris, runners maneuver around trees and carry heavy objects up the sometimes snow-covered Laurel Highlands mountains, climbing up to 1,000 feet as they go. Warriors aged 16 and older make a 4-mile circuit, whereas younger participants run age-appropriate distances of a half mile or a full mile. Trophies and the respect of all the woodland creatures are awarded to the top male and female runners, top male and female teams, and top co-ed team. According to the Daily American, funds raised from the race provide camp scholarships that allow kids to attend residential and day programs at the 263-acre YMCA Camp T. Frank Soles.

A night spent dancing to a DJ at the club burns calories and works up a sweat, so why not put the dance floor on a 5K course? That's exactly what Night Nation Run has done—participants run, walk, or dance their way through a race course illuminated by interactive light shows and pumping with electronic dance music from live DJs. After partying through multiple DJ stages, revelers finish at a raucous main-stage after party. Headliner DJs soundtrack the event on the main stage while participants celebrate crossing the finish line as a member of the Night Nation.

  • Maya Organization
The Pittsburgh Pedal Crawl turns the city into a giant history book—and its participants ride their bikes straight into the past. The ride is designed for pedal-pushers of all abilities with a family fun run and 10-, 25-, and 50-mile routes, but it isn't a race. In fact, braking is encouraged. Historians man rest stops along each route, where they educate riders about some of the most significant moments in Pittsburgh's history, such as the fateful city council meeting of 1985 when Pittsburgh finally decided to have a history. The crawl benefits MAYA organization, which specializes in postpartum counseling, depression, and other issues.
