  • Gymcats
Experienced gymnasts twirl and flip at one end of Gymcats Gymnastics’ floor as they train for advanced events. At the other end, toddlers learn introductory rolls and coordination. That’s the studio’s philosophy at a glance: real gymnastics taught in classes designed to suit all students. Kids aged 3–4 learn the basics of tumbling while increasing attention spans, learning social skills, and practicing human pyramids to reach cookie jars. More-seasoned athletes can receive instruction on the vault, bars, balance beam, and floor. After they graduate, students can apply their skills toward other sports or practice to become a part of Gymcats’ competitive teams. The gym also caters to grownups by hosting parents’ nights out on select Fridays and overseeing birthday parties.

  • Sylvan Learning Ctr
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews. Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, helping them both catch up and get ahead academically with engaging instruction and cutting-edge technology—including instruction via iPads. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. After-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.

  • Mark Grace Golf
Mark Grace has more than 19 years of teaching experience, including stints as the director of instruction at Colonial Country Club and the director of the Memphis Golf Association. His golf academies occupy two locations, and both utilize the power of technological instruction aids such as video swing analysis, TrackMan Doppler radar ball tracking, and a computer coaching system that can compare the swing to those of more than 400 PGA model swings. Mark bases his teaching philosophy on the foundation of grip pressure, believing that the correct grip is the key to a fluid, balanced, and well-shaped swing.

  • Gordon Elementary School
Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing With the Stars multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn off up to 500 calories with each go-round.

  • University of Memphis
Led by head coach Josh Pastner, the Memphis Tigers remain competitive in the Conference USA standings and are poised to make a run at a 2011 conference championship. Cheer as big man Tarik Black and above-average-sized man Wesley Witherspoon drain three-pointers, posterize opponents with high-flying chest bumps, and hypnotically dribble around the heads of dazed defenders with the coldblooded precision of using gardening shears on a competitor's Roshambo paper hand. From the terrace-level seating, fans can quell their basketball jones in the electrifying atmosphere of the FedExForum while applauding the Tigers' hustle, shouting in approval of the ball boys' impromptu ballet, or attempting a self-imposed water-cooler bath. Each game has an allotment of 200 tickets and seats will be assigned on a first-redeemed first-served basis.

  • Mathnasium
Though many students come to Mathnasium having fallen behind their classmates, a mathematically advanced child sparked the learning program?s creation. As founder Larry Martinek?s young son, Nic, developed an appetite for higher-level math concepts, Larry found himself developing an entirely new teaching language to explain them in an age-appropriate way. The kind of instincts he sought to build up couldn?t be nurtured by drills and rote memorization. Instead, they required a deeper understanding of the principles at the root of mathematical operations, delivered in a way that grade-school kids could apply throughout their academic careers. In just a decade?s time, Larry and his team have established Mathnasium centers in most U.S. states and more than a dozen in other countries. At each, highly trained tutors develop custom learning plans for students in grades K?12 based on The Mathnasium Method. The system combines an education strategy of conceptual, tactile, and visual techniques with a curriculum structure that ensures kids can count, think proportionally, and break complex problems into smaller components to solve simply. Tutors allow some time during each session to help students with the concepts in their math homework, and the centers regularly check report cards and standardized tests as further measures of progress.
