  • Red Frog Events
Urban Dare Adventure Race is a fast-paced competition that challenges two-person teams to decipher clues, navigate the city, and perform playful stunts. A dozen trivia-based clues lead contestants to checkpoints all over Phoenix, where they must use a camera to document their presence and, in some cases, complete challenges, such as scaling a wall or solving a puzzle. In addition to running and walking, contestants may use public transportation to move from checkpoint to checkpoint, though taxis, cars, and bikes are off-limits. Races generally last less than four hours, and the winning team receives free entry to the Super Dare, a cruise-based take on the Urban Dare concept that features a $5,000 grand prize. Proceeds from the race will be used to help battle breast cancer.

  • Sierra Adventure Sports
Generally, adulthood forces people to give up childish pleasure, robbing them of the joy associated with playing in puddles, unearthing hidden treasure, and being silly in public. Sierra Adventure Sports wants grownups to regress, if only for a day. In service of that goal, the company organizes a variety of novel races that range from city scavenger hunts for the casual adventurer to creative triathlon courses for the ambitious athlete. Scavenger Blitz, for instance, turns exploring one's city into a fun, fast-paced race scattered with clues, obstacle courses, and riddles. Racers in teams of at least two scour the urban jungle in search of 12 clues, which can include challenges, riddles, or orders that need be completed before crossing the finish line. Some send racers hunting for a snapshot in front of a landmark, whereas others challenge them to complete some special feat, such as conquering an obstacle course on stilts. The Mad Mud Run challenges participants to sprint and frolic through a dirty and deliciously fun outdoor obstacle course littered with manmade obstructions such as cargo nets, hills of hay bales, monkey bars, and slimy mud pits. Extreme Heat Adventure Races combine equal parts triathlon and scavenger hunt to create a 10–12K journey filled with running, river rafting, and mystery challenges that could pit teams against anything from blindfolded puzzles to wall climbs. Most Sierra Adventure Sports events encourage racers to compete in costumes of all types save for gremlins, which multiply in water and unfairly dominate the timed results.

  • Splash Mob 5K
The kids are lurking around each turn of the 5-kilometer course, their hands full of Super Soakers, water balloons, and other aquatic artillery. A group of runners comes into view, and suddenly it's like the zipper broke on a rain cloud. The children shower the race participants and help them fight the swelter of the Arizona heat. Those who don’t wish to be “hit” wear bright red and wave a white flag in surrender. The kids—who have been instructed to only aim for the neck down—let these ones pass sans moisture. The Splash Mob 5K puts this cool, watery twist on the standard race. Not only does it keep participants cool and kids smiling, but it also raises funds for a good cause: the Children First Academy. This Title I school educates approximately 300 students, 68% of which are homeless and 100% of which qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

  • Bubble Bash 5k
What happens when you combine a 5K run with a white t-shirt and thousands of bubbles? For the answer to that bewildering question, look no further than Bubble Bash 5K, a whimsical event that coats participants in a barrage of bubbles as they run toward the finish line. The noncompetitive race isn't timed, meaning there's nothing stopping you from indulging in a blast of foam at various stations throughout the course. And the fun doesn't end at the finish line; at the post-race party, participants can dance to live music. The event, which is an offshoot of The Color Dash, donates half of its proceeds to local charities.

  • BADASS Dash
BADASS Dash’s organizers live in a world of imagination. Where others see cargo nets, they see giant webs to be scaled. School buses become climbing walls and bales of hay turn into tunnels filled with grass and mud. In city after city, they place 35+ of these obstacles along a 7-kilometer course, and invite individuals and teams to enter the Elite division to test their performance against the best athletes present or even bring their dog along to help. Afterward, the organizers throw a celebratory bash filled with bonfires, food, and prizes for top finishers.
