  • Chicago Helicopter Experience
Chicago is famous for its skyline, but there's only so much sky you can see from the ground. That's why at Chicago Helicopter Experience, pilots lift passengers from Chicago's first private heliport, to enjoy the view of downtown's busy streets and wide-open views of the city's magnificent architecture. Three types of tours each afford a unique experience, whether it's seeing the sunset reflecting off the Willis Tower or cruising over the nocturnal landscape of the city. Each tour takes place within the state-of-the-art EC130 helicopter, which features plush leather seats, noise canceling headsets, and bubble windows with a panoramic 180° view outside.

  • Acquaviva Winery -
Picturesque rows of vines and trellises blanket Acquaviva Winery's 40-acre estate. But this idyllic outdoor setting is hardly the only draw. In fact, it may even be overshadowed by the elegant edifice standing nearby. That would be Acquaviva's tasting room, full service restaurant, and marketplace. This structure, whose architecture and decor are the work of artist Andrew Zabela, features the rich color palette and complexity associated with the high Renaissance. Domed ceilings display elaborate, gold-painted plaster filigrees, which, in turn, frame Zabela's hand-painted murals. The elaborateness of the decor actually stands in stark contrast to the simplicity of the wines. "We have a minimal intervention approach to our process," says wine maker Sergio Benavides, "permitting our terroir, grapes, and vines to speak for themselves." He manages every acre of the vineyards, coaxing flavor from 23 different varieties of grapes. His care and tending pay off: virtually every bottle of wine the vineyard produces, from the Bianco Bello to the Frontenac, boasts multiple awards and notes of robust self-esteem.

  • St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboats
Through St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboats, Rich Anderson shares the rich history of the Fox River with tour groups, a history that his 68-year-old business is very much apart of. Rich’s father, Chet, purchased the Honeymoon Queen for $200 in 1945, hoping to offer rides to picnickers in neighboring Pottawatomie Park. Though the boat required exhaustive repairs, it would soon become a regular sight as it ferried school groups, dinner parties, and lazy ducks along the waters. Both Chet and the Honeymoon Queen retired from the waters by the 1980s, turning over the operations to Rich and the current fleet of paddleboats, which feature open upper decks and spacious enclosed lower decks. Today, as the St. Charles Belle II and Fox River Queen churn the serene waters, guests take in scenic views and learn about the Pottawatomie tribe that lived along the river’s banks almost 200 years ago.

Tours convene throughout Chicago’s many neighborhoods, giving guests a sneak peek into Chicago's signature confections, boutique shops, and mobile sweet-vending trucks. The chocolate or cupcake jaunts provide the perfect setting for a girls’ day out or bachelorette party, showing tour-goers the sweeter side of the city without getting caught in construction sites of shoddily built gingerbread houses.
