  • Columbia City Ale House
Years spent living in England made their mark on Columbia City Ale House founder Jeff Eagan. The country's particular style of local pubs fascinated him, and when he returned to Seattle in 1991, he recruited chef Jeff Reich to help him re-create that atmosphere by founding the 74th Street Ale House, the first of their triad of Seattle ale houses. The pubs dedicated their taps to local craft beers in a decade where the streets mostly flowed with basic American brews, and caught attention for their beer selection and for a fierce dedication to fresh-prepared pub fare classified as "herbaceous and hot" by the Seattle Times. Eclectic menus regularly updated by chef and Seattle culinary veteran Kathy Christopher boast gumbo with made-from-scratch stock and a breaded-chicken sandwich with garlic oil that claims a Best Chicken Sandwich distinction from Seattle Weekly. Columbia City Ale House is the latest in their expanding endeavors, and shares with its siblings a dedication to craft brews and an upscale approach to pub fare. English and local beers flow from the 21 taps, half of which change regularly and include favorites such as Fullers' Extra Special Bitters and perennial winners from Fremont and Boundary Bay. On the menu, a grilled Reuben sandwich boasts corned beef braised in Blackthorn hard cider, and flat iron steak rubbed in ancho-chili powder and pepper stars in a southwest steak sandwich. A regular specials menu encourages culinary and libationary adventure with a recommended beer or wine pairing listed next to each dish. Inside the ale house, light shines through geometric stained-glass windows, bought from a demolished Greek Orthodox church. Squares of the same stained glass decorate the small upper level, and arches centered on a cross stand at the top of the bar. The space reflects the English pub feel with sturdy woods, a mirror emblazoned with an Old Bailey beer logo, and servers who impersonate the Queen Mother between shifts.

  • Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture
The Northwest Museum of Art & Culture preserves and illuminates an extensive collection of material about the Plateau Indian culture of the Pacific Northwest. Traditional textiles and carvings coexist with more than 10,000 photographs that document the indigenous culture. Historic regional paintings include works from Spokane's Works Progress Administration arts center, which created a vibrant space for artists in the depths of the Great Depression. In addition to its staggering exhibits and regular collections, the museum immerses guests in turn-of-the-century culture with the Campbell House, which is nestled on the campus. Originally built by Idaho mine owner Amasa Campbell at the end of the 19th century, the neoclassical revival home designed by Kirtland K. Cutter provides a window into the life of a wealthy northwestern family at the turn of the century. A handsome Tudor façade welcomes visitors before they venture into the elegantly restored interior, which deftly mixes architectural styles with a French-style reception area, a Middle Eastern–style game room, and a library outfitted with an inglenook fireplace and an authentic steam-powered flat-screen TV.

  • Dive & Adventure Travel Expo 2013
The Dive & Adventure Travel Expo 2013 will connect scuba and snorkel enthusiasts with some of the industry's top experts, brands, and innovations. More than 50 seminars scheduled throughout the weekend will showcase the diving deftness of speakers from across the country, enabling attendees to net information on such topics as underwater photography and safety. ReefID founder and editor John Fifer will host two of these gatherings, sharing ways his online database of diver-captured photos is helping raise awareness for marine life. Fifer will also play host to the expo's signature Saturday Night Film Festival event at 7 p.m. alongside 3D photographer Mark Blum and other presenters. In addition to engaging activities, the Dive & Adventure Travel Expo 2013 is also home to the best in dive-related gear and information. Approximately 140 exhibit booths connect attendees with purveyors of international adventure from global hotspots including Palau, Yap, the Virgin Islands, and Fiji. In addition to resort representatives, booths also house all of the equipment needed for undersea excursions, with new products ranging from snorkel and scuba innovations to travel accessories and luggage. During face-to-face conversations, dive skills clinics, or snorkel sword fights, expo-goers can get travel tips or plan dive vacations around the globe. While parents research, younger visitors can decamp to a youth section filled with interactive attractions designed for youngsters aged 8?12. Attendees who come for the education should probably stick for the prizes; the expo plans to give away over $50,000 in door prizes, including a massive grand prize: a full set of dive gear including a drysuit, Weezle undergarments, ScubaPro G260 regulator, Aqua Lung BCD, a TUSA mask, fin, and snorkel set, an Oceanic dive computer, and trips including weeklong Philippine dive adventure from the Marco Vincent Resort.

We will show you how to use it all so there is no need to be intimidated by any new equipment. Athletes should bring: A water bottle, fitness attire (comfortable and flexible), a towel (if needed). Appointment required: For initial classes only (first 3 fundamental classes) Good for beginners: Yes Average class length: 60 min Number of staff: 1-2 during class, 5 total different coaches Class location: Mix of indoor and outdoor of our gym Established: 2010 Parking: parking lot in front. Pro tip: Let your coaches know of any injuries and concerns before you get started. Also let them know how you are feeling afterwards. Q&A With Crossfit Epiphany How do you keep clients motivated to reach fitness goals: In order to keep our athletes motivated we rely on 3 things. Results, the community, and our atmosphere. We program our workouts to help you reach your fitness goals quickly and have a good time in the process. When you start to see those changes you?ve been wanting you will keep you coming back for more. Our community in the gym also helps motivate our athletes during each workout. As you get to know people that are on the same journey as you, you begin to want to work alongside them as you sweat together. Hard work is easier when done with friends. And finally we created the proper environment for workouts. We have everything you need including nutrition support and workout tracking. Crossfit is simple, why not do it on my own? Well aside from being able to come in to our facility, look at the pre-programmed workout, get all the equipment you need, and do it alongside others that do it, we also provide personal instruction. One of the great things about Crossfit is that many of the movements can be done almost anywhere. It?s ?functional? fitness! But getting the proper training to do those movements is important. Here at CFE we really focus on correct technique in order to provide a safe and effective workout system. Proper instruction on each movement and proper loading on a beginner, especially the weighted movements, can help prevent injury and when movements are done properly they can provide better results. Out philosophy is technique first, speed second. What can a member expect the first time? When you come in to CFE for the first time there is no need to be nervous. We provide you with all the information you will need to get started. There will be plenty of time to ask any questions you might have. We walk you through the entire process of what to expect on a day to day basis as a Crossfit athlete. We will go over what Crossfit is, how classes work, and how to integrate into the gym. We will go over a warm up and then break down our basic fundamental movements done in the gym. We also put you through a short evaluation workout using those movements in order to gauge your fitness level. This allows us to integrate you into the programming properly. Then we go over a short stretching session and send you on your way.

  • Cascade Canoe & Kayak Centers
An osprey hovers 30 feet in the air over Lake Washington, virtually silent until it spots something beneath the water's surface. Quickly, it folds its wings and plunges into the water, emerging seconds later with a fish ripped firmly between its talons. Nearby, Cascade Canoe & Kayak Centers' founder, Dan Henderson, floats by silently. This slice of the pristine outdoors happens to be his workplace, but none of it would have happened if his mother hadn't forced him to take a canoeing lesson in 1972. Despite his initial reluctance, Mr. Henderson took to the water like a robot to a magnet store. He went on to race whitewater canoes and flat-water Olympic-style canoes, eventually earning four medals as a member of the U.S. national team. Later, Mr. Henderson became a coach and set out to train a new crop of water athletes. To this end, Cascade Canoe & Kayak Centers serves as the natural continuation of Mr. Henderson's journey: a place to, in his words, "share paddling with the community in a manner that is fun and safe." Under the leadership of expert guides—many of whom learned their trade directly under Dan Henderson's wing—visitors embark on day trips into inlets and bays, paddling in the shadow of the Olympic Mountains or tailgating orca whales. The staff also leads canoe and kayak classes that aim to take novices from beginner to expert. Their efforts have proved fruitful, as three of Cascade Canoe & Kayak Centers' students have made it to international-level competitions.

  • Island Adventures
On a childhood fishing trip with his dad in the San Juan Islands, Shane Aggergaard noticed a group of orcas swimming toward his boat. Rather than steering clear of human contact, they swam directly under the boat—one even looked Shane right in the eye. It was a moment of whale-human connection he never forgot, and nowadays tries to approximate through Island Adventures. The whale-watching tour company, which Shane founded with his wife, Jennifer, brings passengers into close contact with the aquatic mammals of the Pacific Northwest. Depending on the season, wilderness-savvy guides—who’ve led more than 6,000 collective wildlife tours during their careers—can introduce passengers to minke whales and the San Juan’s three resident orca pods, migrating gray whales, or humpbacks. Their 101-foot vessel, The Island Explorer 3, boasts a large bow pulpit and a viewing deck with more than 400 feet of railing, ideal for seeing whales in their entirety, from their tails to their trusty sets of water wings. The team backs each tour with a whale-sighting guarantee and strives to ensure future sightings by making sustainable choices, from its ecofriendly cleaning products to the boat's cabin floor made from recycled tires.
