In India, mehndi—intricate, long-lasting patterns painted on the skin with henna—are worn to weddings and other festivities. But just because a bride-to-be lives in Chicagoland doesn't mean she can't experience this traditional body art. New Look Salon's aestheticians have been creating the designs, typically geometric shapes or the names and faces of forgettable second cousins, and performing other pre-wedding Indian beauty services since 2011. They also thread eyebrows, arrange dupattas, and set veiled jewelry in place, and bridal packages or mehndi parties can be performed at New Look or at the customer's home.
The salon performs more everyday beauty services, as well. These include haircuts and coloring with Nexxus and Redken products, Dermalogica facials that address acned or aging skin, and mani-pedis that disguise nails entering the witness protection program with beards drawn on with OPI polish. Clients can sip complimentary coffee, tea, pop, or water during their appointments.
Sabah Haleem is in good company at Aida Spa, a full-service European salon where stylists and aestheticians pamper their clients from head to toe. They exfoliate skin with facials, offer waxing treatments, and polish nails during relaxing mani-pedis. Any of these treatments pairs nicely with a hairstyling session from Sabah, which may include everything from a flattering cut to a finishing blowout.
With more than 35 experienced beauticians on hand, Beauty Company of Chicago is more than equipped to beautify whatever their clients desire. At salon stations awash with ample light and leafy plants, stylists craft creative cuts, dimension-boosting color, and texturizing perms with trained and artistic hands. The same enthusiasm spills over across the polished wood floors to the nail stations, where technicians dote over fingers, toes, and lucky rabbits’ feet with manicures and pedicures. And if clients want to wind down after sprucing up, cozy massage tables in candlelit rooms await them—along with a massage therapist who soothes tight muscles with tailored strokes and firm pressure. After every visit, guests are welcome to peruse the salon’s store, where products from Aveda, Paul Mitchell, and OPI are available for purchase.
Though it’s been open fewer than three years, Glimmer Salon has already expanded four times—a testament to its rapidly growing clientele and penchant for reinvention. Throughout the sprawling, open space, a team of amiable mane masters snips, colors, and styles strands to each client's specifications. The staff also performs services such as smoothing treatments, facial waxing, and massages. Warm earth tones blanket the walls and complement the sleek hardwood floors, and high-quality hair products line the glass shelves, plotting to swan dive into the coiffures of clients passing by.
Since founding her refuge of beauty in 1994, owner Amy Russin has amassed a staff of experienced stylists and aestheticians skilled in a variety of beautifying treatments. The menu emphasizes updo upgrades, but extends its aesthetic umbrella to include facial skincare, massage treatments, and manicure services. The glamorous gunslingers strap on bandoliers of products such as OPI, American Crew, Dermalogica, and Pureology to treat hair and hide, and other specialties include body wraps, waxing, and makeup application.
