Rugged Seascapes, Roman Ruins, and World-Class Museums

Sorrento is known for its scenic lemon groves, which help produce some of the world’s best gelato and limoncello—a liqueur served as an after-dinner drink. The port town is also a great launching point for exploring the Amalfi Coast, home to plunging cliffs, pebble beaches, and pastel-colored villages. It’s a landscape so alluring that the ancient Greeks called it the “land of the Sirens,” most famously depicted in The Odyssey. You’ll have a chance to taste both of these treats and traverse the coast during this seven-day getaway from Great Value Vacations. The tour will also take you to Rome, where you can see famous Italian landmarks such as the Sistine Chapel. Click here for more information on the trip.

Days 1–4: After landing in Rome, you’ll be taken to Sorrento’s Grand Hotel Flora, which sits on the city’s main street. There’ll be plenty of time for exploration on your own over the next four days, and a day trip to Positano and the ninth-century village of Amalfi are included. Optional trips include a guided tour of Capri, an offshore island with Roman ruins and rugged seascapes. Don’t miss the island’s Blue Grotto, named for the neon-blue hue of its water. You’ll also have an opportunity to tour a lemon and mozzarella farm before leaving Sorrento.

Days 5–7: While en route to Rome, you’ll stop in Pompeii for a guided look at some of the city’s ruins, including the Temple of Apollo. You’ll spend the next three days in the capital with Hotel Meliá Roma Aurelia Antica as your home base. This leg of the journey will take you to Saint Peter’s Square and the Vatican Museums, which Frommer’s praises for having “one of the world’s greatest art collections.”

During your free time, you can visit the Colosseum or go shopping on the Via Condotti, Rome’s most fashionable street. There will be a farewell dinner on the sixth day, and that following morning, after breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airport for a return flight to the United States.
