Private Beach Resort on Island Accessible Only by Ferry
Though it lies just 6 miles offshore from Cancún, Isla Mujeres feels like an ocean away. It's a strip of sand and palms less than 2 square miles in area, and it's accessible only by ferry. Avalon Reef Isla Mujeres occupies its own islet that is connected to the main island by a narrow bridge. It gives the resort a private feeling, even for the already-secluded Isla Mujeres.
A sugar-sand beach encircles the resort; within that, you can find a natural tidal pool. It's shallow and has warm water, making it a nice spot to go snorkeling or take a bubble bath. While you're at the beach, it's worth it to head to the resort's beach bar area, which features live music on Friday nights from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Or feel free to lounge at the pool, which has a swim-up bar that prepares frozen daiquiris. The hotel also has an onsite restaurant that serves seafood, and this Getaway includes a complimentary American breakfast for two. You can get sweeping views of the Caribbean from ocean-view rooms, which are located in the resort’s main tower.
Isla Mujeres, Mexico: Mayan Ruins and Lively Markets
Isla Mujeres, or Island of Women, was named for the female-shaped idols that were found scattered around the island by a 1517 Spanish expedition. There's also a temple to the Mayan fertility goddess Ixchel on the island. The ancient ruins were partially damaged by a hurricane in 1988, but some of the temple and most of its foundation are still visible and remain a major tourist draw.
The island’s charming, four-block-by-six-block downtown is known as El Centro. It's worth visiting El Centro for its outdoor market, El Macado, where vendors sell fresh flowers, exotic fruits, tacos, and vegetables. Stop by any of the open-air restaurants in town and you can get a front-row view of the bustling little downtown area as you dine on fresh Mexican fare.
