Spanish-Style Villas on Nicaragua's Pacific Coast
A few decades ago, surfers first discovered that there were some gnarly waves off the coast of San Juan del Sur, a tiny, laid-back fishing village. Though the sleepy village began to attract crowds, local officials have aimed to preserve the small-town feel by limiting development along the coast. One of the properties lucky enough to call this spot home is Bahia del Sol Villas and Condominiums, which is perched on a hill overlooking the sea.
Bahia del Sol’s private community of nine villas, stuccoed with spanish-tile roofs, could easily be mistaken for a resort in the Mediterranean. A spacious terrace on the second story of each villa looks out to San Juan del Sur’s crescent-shaped beach along the Pacific. You can get to the beach by taking a 10-minute walk through town, but if you want to take a quick swim, the resort has its own two swimming pools lined with a broad, chair-lined sun deck.
Inside the villas, the walls are decorated with brightly colored paintings by regional artists. Locally harvested wood features prominently in the furniture, such as in the kitchen’s hand-carved countertops. All rooms are temperature controlled, too: the second floor has central air, and the ground level keeps cool thanks to ocean breezes and teams of parrots flapping in unison.
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua: Undisturbed Tropical Wildlife and Popular Surf Spots
Situated on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, San Juan del Sur has been a favorite of in-the-know surfers for years thanks to its year-round warm waters. Many visitors head straight to the white sands of Playa Maderas. Here, surf shops dot the streets closest to the beach, offering lessons and boards for beginners and veterans alike. Farther offshore, the waters are calmer and filled with marlin, yellow tuna, and snapper—making this a perfect spot for deep-sea fishing and snorkeling.
Although most of the action takes place along San Juan del Sur's crescent-shaped bay, the gorgeous scenery inland is also worth exploring. About an hour and a half drive north of San Juan del Sur lie the Mombacho and Masaya volcanoes. The 4,000-foot Mombacho is dormant, but one of the Masaya craters still emits smoke and gas. Zipline tours cut through the canopies of a tropical forest, where you can listen as resident howler monkeys auction off treehouses.
