Private Island Resort with Plenty of Onsite Activities

The secluded bungalows and villas of Barefoot Cay Resort are scattered throughout a 4-acre, privately owned islet just off Roatán island’s southern shore. One of the best places to enjoy the solitude is on an undeveloped stretch of sandy beach overlooking the reef that shelters the cay. This is a great spot for snorkeling—the water is usually calm, and the reef comes up close to the surface, showcasing coral and countless fish. The resort offers guided snorkeling trips and provides gear free of charge from the onsite PADI-certified dive center.

Other facilities include a marina and a thatched-roof palapa, which has a lowered platform for easy access to swimming and kayaking. Most of the inland action centers on the pool area and an adjacent two-level cabana, where guests can dine amid 360-degree views of the cay. Head up to the cabana’s second floor to relax at the Lookout Lounge. There’s also a full-service spa with treatments ranging from mocha-infused body scrubs to deep-tissue massages. Both the partial villas and two-bedroom loft suites have views of the ocean, and the suites offer fully equipped kitchens with stainless-steel appliances and cookware.

Roatán, Honduras: Diver's Paradise with Dense Jungle Interior

Though Roatán—the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands—used to be plagued by pirates looting the gold of Spanish galleons, most of the popular shipwrecks offshore were purposefully sunk for divers. But that doesn't make the many dive sites surrounding the island any less appealing. Walls of coral and more than 800 species of fish have turned them into natural wonders. Starfish, sea turtles, and eels are common sights during scuba-diving and snorkeling trips.

Farther inland, dense jungles and grassy hills stretch across the surface of the island. From the secluded bays of Roatán's East End, you can get a change of scenery by taking winding dirt roads to smaller villages. The towns of Coxen Hole and French Harbour in particular provide a taste of local culture in the form of street vendors, an iguana farm, and shrimp fishers working the docks.

Unfortunately it rained during our entire vacation to Roatan during the last week of January. Since it was already wet, we tried to make the best of it by diving a fair amount. I thought the conditions were fine, but other more experienced divers thought that the rain had impaired the diving conditions as well. As an aside, one of the divemasters said that her favourite time of year for diving is Aug-October. It was great to wake up and walk downstairs to the dive shop in the morning, but the cost of diving at barefoot is definitely more expensive than most of the other dive shops on the west side of the island, especially if you are renting equipment as well.

The sand fleas were horrible. The beach by the resort was not an actual beach just sand. The beds were uncomfortable. The water next to the resort had a lot of trash.
