Seven-Day Nile River Cruise in Egypt
When the Nile floods, deposits of silt from the riverbed intermix with the surrounding soil. This simple phenomenon allowed the early Egyptians to cultivate wheat and flax, which in turn sustained one of the world’s oldest civilizations. During this eight-day, seven-night cruise, you’ll visit four ancient cities and historic temples built along the river. Cruises take place aboard one of four five-star ships, each outfitted with restaurants, a swimming pool, and a disco.
Below is a brief rundown of cruise highlights. Click here to see a detailed itinerary.
Days 1–3: Luxor and Edfu
After arriving in Luxor, you’ll be transferred to your ship to settle into a standard, double-occupancy cabin. The rest of the day is yours to explore the various onboard amenities, which might include a sushi restaurant or a wine-and-cheese bar.
Luxor served as Egypt’s religious capital for more than a thousand years, during which time the country saw its most prosperous period to date. On Day 2, you can visit the city’s elaborate temples on your own, or take an optional excursion to the Valley of the Kings, which contains 63 richly decorated tombs of pharaohs and nobles.
From here, the boat journeys south to the city of Edfu, home to one of the largest and most immaculately preserved temples in Egypt: the Temple of Horus. It dates back to 237 BC and is lined with relief sculptures that are still intact.
Days 4–5: Aswan
You’ll have two full days to explore the desert city of Aswan, a historic trade center that was once the gateway to Africa. Located on a picturesque stretch of the Nile, Aswan is now a popular resort town known for its traditional wooden sailboats and palm-fringed islands. A number of exciting excursions are offered in Aswan, including a leisurely camel ride through town. On Day 5, you can take a trip to Abu Simbel, an archaeological site with magnificent statues that tower up to 70 feet.
Days 6–8: Aswan, Kom Ombo, and Edfu
The cruise makes one last stop in Kom Ombo before heading back to Luxor. Surrounded by cornfields and cattle farms, this agricultural town is famous for the Temple of Kom Ombo, a perfectly symmetrical double temple that Travel + Leisure calls “the most breathtaking ruin on the Nile.”
