Days 1–3 Once you arrive in Costa Rica at Juan Santamaria or Daniel Oduber Airports, a guide will pick you up for a 3.5-hour drive to Arenal’s Casa Luna Hotel and Spa. This eco-conscious hotel features an up-close view of the storied Arenal Volcano. There’s no set itinerary for the rest of the evening, so feel free to indulge in a mud mask at the onsite spa or explore Arenal’s picturesque landscape.
The next day, the adventures kick off early in the morning with a horseback ride through the dense rainforest skirting the base of Arenal Volcano. Perhaps the best way to take in the landscape, though, is from overhead on an included zipline ride that zooms through the forest canopy. The evening closes with a visit to the 29,000-acre Arenal Volcano National Park, where you’ll see lava rock fields and catch a dazzling sunset. Your last day in Arenal is yours to spend at your leisure.
Days 4–7 El Coco Beach, located on Guanacaste’s Pacific Coast, provides a cosmopolitan contrast to the rainforest wilderness. You’ll spend the next three relaxing days at Coco Beach Hotel or similar accommodations situated near the water and downtown’s dynamic nightlife.
Frommer’s calls the beach “a prime jumping off point” for some of Costa Rica’s best scuba diving. Surfers also head to the area to master the challenging breaks at Witch’s Rock. The surrounding town operates as a fishing port, and local restaurants serve up fresh-caught mahi mahi and yellowfin tuna. In downtown El Coco Beach, you can try your luck at the casinos or shop for last-minute souvenir handicrafts before boarding your flight home.
