AAA Four-Diamond Hotel in Downtown San Jose del Cabo

Housemade jalapeño-infused vodka is a key component in the Sea of Cortez martini, one of many uncommon cocktails served on Casa Natalia’s Martini Deck. The casually chic bar is a striking contrast to the neighboring 17th-century church, one of the many historical buildings lining the streets of San Jose del Cabo. Casa Natalia, a AAA Four Diamond–rated hotel since 2009, is a modern boutique property with vibrantly colorful furniture and an innovative restaurant and bar. But the Mexican-handicraft decorations in each room suggest its owners haven’t forgotten Cabo’s roots. Fodor’s calls the hotel “the most luxurious option for those who wish to spend time enjoying the culture of this tranquil town.”

The Martini Deck is attached to the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, Mi Cocina, where Executive Chef Loic infuses traditional Mexican cuisine with French flair. The results are decadent—spicy fra diavolo shrimp simmered in white wine, orange juice, and a chipotle sauce, or organic roasted chicken with caramelized apples and chocolate. After dinner, wander back out onto the Martini Deck to sample some of the bar’s 22 fine tequilas.

Deluxe superior rooms channel the peninsula’s excellent sunsets with walls of orange and yellow and bright, fresh flowers set on antique end tables. Each room has a private balcony with a hammock for lazing in the sun. Casa Natalia prohibits guests younger than 14.

San Jose del Cabo, Mexico: Watersports, White-Sand Beaches, and Festive Parties

Located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico and 10 degrees below the Tropic of Cancer, San Jose del Cabo enjoys pleasant year-round temperatures. The town embodies the traditional side of Mexico through Spanish colonial architecture, hidden courtyards, and flowering bougainvillea. After exploring the town’s sleepy beaches and sun-baked storefronts, you might want to check out its neighbor, the rowdy Cabo San Lucas, for late-night thrills. Slip into one of downtown Cabo San Lucas’s trendy restaurants near the marina to try chicharrones (fried pork rinds) and chilies en nogada, poblano chilies topped with a walnut cream sauce.

Just south of Cabo San Lucas, the white sand Lover's Beach (or Playa del Amor) stretches alongside the Sea of Cortez and is frequented by sea lions and humpback whales, depending on the season. It's a popular spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming. Tour boats and water taxis regularly zip from Cabo San Lucas to Lover's Beach and the neighboring El Arco, a naturally formed granite arch that has become the town’s unofficial symbol.
