Norwalk, Connecticut: Stately Mansions, Centuries-Old Architecture, and Fresh Oysters

Founded in 1640, the city of Norwalk has a rich pre-Revolutionary history—rumor has it "Yankee Doodle" was inspired by troops there during the French and Indian War. Today, the city reflects its history through its centuries-old buildings, which span Gothic, Victorian, and Colonial eras. Visit the Mill Hill Historic Park to see the old townhouse and an early 19th-century one-room schoolhouse. From there, you can cross the Norwalk River and head south to the castle-like Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, which presents a more decadent example of Norwalk's history. The mansion, which appeared in The Stepford Wives , features an imposing façade made of granite blocks that are 20-inches thick, and an interior trimmed with marble columns , heavenly frescoes, and gilded chandeliers.

Norwalk's coastal Atlantic location has helped make it a leading oyster producer for centuries. Each year in early September, seafood aficionados flock to Norwalk for their annual oyster fest to sample some of the ocean’s fresh shellfish. The area also has several oceanside cafes that serve oysters throughout the year.

About 15 minutes west lies downtown Stamford, which locals refer to as "Little Manhattan" for its burgeoning number of high-rise buildings. Stamford's downtown center, which is less than 10 miles from Double Tree by Hilton Norwalk, showcases more than 450 years of history with Gothic Revival, Victorian, and art deco-style buildings that have earned spots on the National Register of Historic Places.
