On this nine-day, six-night tour of India from Friendly Planet Travel, you’ll get an in-depth look at three cities—Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur—via guided tours, optional excursions, and leisure time at each stop. Along the way, you’ll see some of the country’s biggest attractions, including the Taj Mahal, as well as off-the-beaten-path stops such as Barara Village, a rural town outside of Jaipur where travelers interact with locals and learn about Indian village life.

Delhi Highlights: You’ll take a bicycle rickshaw to India’s largest mosque, Jama Masjid. Built in the 1650s, it’s one of the most beautiful houses of worship on the planet, thanks to a decorative exterior etched with intricate carvings and verses from the Koran. The minarets offer expansive views of Old Delhi. In addition, you’ll tour the modern Laxmi Narayan temple; Qutab Minar, the tallest free-standing minaret in the world; the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, Raj Ghat; and the Parliament building and the president’s residence, Rastrapathi Bhawan. You’ll spend your nights in Delhi at Shangri-La Eros Hotel.
Agra Highlights: View the Taj Mahal during a sunrise tour. The Taj Mahal was built in the 17th century by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as an expression of his love for his wife, and is one of the undisputed seven wonders of the world. It took 22 years and 20,000 workers to build the white-marble temple, which seems to glow in the light of the moon. Agra accommodations are at Trident, Agra. Optional excursions to Agra Fort, a massive fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site, and Itmad-Ud-Daulah, the first Mughal structure made completely out of marble, are available for $25 per person for each tour (or at a discounted rate with the optional excursions package mentioned above).
Jaipur Highlights: Before arrivinig in Jaipur, you’ll visit the city of Fatehpur Sikri, built by Mughal emperor Akbar in the 1500s. In Jaipur, you’ll tour the Amer Fort—set atop the Aravalli hills, it features impressive battlements and crenelated walls. You’ll ascend to the fortress by Jeep or elephant (based on availability) to see its many courtyards and halls inlaid with precious stones, and enjoy a stay at Trident, Jaipur.
Hawa Mahal is also on the agenda. Looking very much like a beehive, Hawa Mahal, known as the Palace of the Winds in English, is one of the Pink City’s biggest attractions. It was here that royal women, who were never seen by the public, could look out of 950 windows to watch day-to-day life in the city. An optional excursion explores the City Palace Museum and the Jantar Mantar observatory ($30 per person).
