Days 1–3: Quito City Tour, Otavalo Market, and Papallacta Hot Springs

The tour begins with a visit to the capital city of Quito, the world’s highest capital at more than 9,000 feet above sea level. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Quito has rugged, cobbled streets lined with elaborate 16th-century churches.

The real must-see attraction is the Middle of the World Monument, located right along the equator, where you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere.

On Day 2, you’ll drive about 1.5 hours north to Otavalo, a town surrounded by three volcanoes. The Otavalo market provides a glimpse of contemporary Ecuadorian culture, with stands stocked with colorful, hand-woven garments, traditional Andean musical instruments, and fresh vegetables.

Travel to Papallacta later on for an afternoon of leisure in the city’s famed spas and hot springs.

Days 4–5: Amazon Rainforest Tour

The tour journeys deep into the Amazon rainforest, first by bus and then on a short canoe trip down the Napo River. Early the next morning, embark on a hike that follows the river’s meandering path. Along the way, you'll cross swinging bridges and trek through patches of dense tropical foliage. Keep an eye out for exotic wildlife, as the forest is a natural habitat for parakeets, wild monkeys, and more than 4,000 types of butterflies.

Day 6: Banos Hot Springs and Devil's Cauldron

The day begins with brief tours of Puyo and Banos, a city known for its mineral-infused hot springs and traditional palm nut carvings. In the downtown area in Banos and you can watch as local producers stretch and hand-make huge batches of taffy from cane sugar. Next up, you’ll take an exhilarating hike to Devil's Cauldron, a spectacular waterfall that spills out of a mountainside carpeted in thick, green vegetation.

Days 7–8: Cotopaxi National Park and Back to Quito

At an elevation of more than 19,000 feet, the snow-capped Cotopaxi Mountain is among the world's tallest active volcanoes. You won’t reach the summit on this trip—that hike would take several days—but there's plenty to take in at the lower elevations. Try to catch a glimpse of a rare Andean condor during a one-hour hike around Lake Limpiopungo.
