Days 1–3: Madrid An overnight flight takes you to the Spanish capital of Madrid, home to centuries-old cathedrals, world-class art museums, and hundreds of tapas bars. On your first full day in Madrid, you’ll be able to visit these sights at your own pace.

The next day, you’ll take a city tour of Madrid, driving along the city’s iconic Gran Via, which weaves past some of its most-visited attractions. Stop at the Puerto del Sol, Madrid’s central city square and the center of Spain. Here, pedestrians walk past historic government buildings and monuments, including a 150-year-old clock tower.

Next up is The Prado, which houses some of Spain’s most-revered artistic works, including permanent collections by El Greco, Velázquez, and other Spanish masters. Be sure to catch Velázquez’s Las Meninas, perhaps Spain’s most-beloved painting.

Days 4–6: Toledo, Granada, Seville About an hour south of Madrid lies Toledo, a city so rife with historical buildings that The New York Times likens it to “a medieval Oz.” Sitting atop one of the city’s highest points is the Alcazar of Toledo, a 3rd-century Roman fortress that was restored by Charles I and Philip II.

Other stops include the Santa Maria la Blanca synagogue and the Church of Santo Tome, which was built in the 14th century. Outside, its elaborate bell tower is an icon of Moorish architecture, but the church is best known for what’s on the inside. You can see El Greco’s The Burial of Count of Orgaz, which is widely considered his finest work.

After Toledo, you’ll head south to Granada, one of the most-visited cities in the autonomous region of Andalusia. Granada is home to the Alhambra, a former Moorish palace that Frommer’s calls “perhaps the most remarkable fortress ever constructed. Built on a hill near Andalucía’s Sierra Nevadas, the complex dates back to the 14th century, and was home of Moorish kings before King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella conquered the Iberian peninsula in 1492. Its many tenants have contributed reflecting pools, fountains, and lush gardens.

Your last day is spent touring Seville, the capital of Andalusia as well as its largest city. Seville is known for its picturesque plazas and the Giralda Tower, a sacred 12th-century minaret and bell tower. You’ll also visit the ornate Seville Cathedral, one of the world’s largest churches.

Days 7–8: Madrid and Cordoba

The last leg of the trip takes you to the ancient city of Cordoba, once the capital of Muslim Spain. Amidst Cordoba’s characteristic white-washed homes lies the 8th-century Mezquita. The Catholic cathedral is known for its more than 800 columns, made of jasper, marble, and granite and linked by white- and red-striped arches.
