On this eight-day tour of Italy, you’ll split time between three of the world’s most enchanting cities: Venice, Florence, and Rome. A guide will escort you to each city’s most-famous attractions, including Michelangelo’s David and the Sistine Chapel, and lead optional excursions along the way. The hotels included in this tour are all centrally located, so you can explore the cities on your own as well.

We’ve listed some of our favorite highlights below. Click here to see the full itinerary and trip details.

    Days 1–3: Venice

Accommodations: 4-star Grand Hotel Principe, 4-star Amadeus Hotel, or 4-star Hotel Carlton & Grand Canal, depending on availability.

After arriving in Venice on Day 2, guests will have the afternoon to explore the city at their leisure. You may want to use this time to explore off-the-beaten destinations, such as a traditional fish market.

The first guided tour kicks off on the morning of Day 3 with a boat ride to the Island of Murano. Artists have been making glass here since the late 13th century—today that glass is world famous for its colorful, transparent quality. A walking tour back in the city visits a number of attractions, including Doge Palace. Inside this Gothic masterpiece, the walls and ceilings are covered with frescoes by artists such as Titian and Tintoretto, who were famous for their dramatic use of light.

    Days 4–5: Pisa, Florence

Accommodations: 4-star Grand Hotel Mediterraneo, or 4-star Grand Hotel Adriatico, depending on availability

The tour heads south to Florence on Day 4 via a scenic drive through Tuscany. Along the way, you’ll stop at a local Tuscan farm for a wine tasting, and visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Travel + Leisure named Florence the world’s second best city in 2012, calling the capital of the Renaissance “livelier than ever.” Galleries such as the Academia of Fine Arts house masterpieces by Michelangelo, Botticelli, and da Vinci, alongside trendy wine bars and designer boutiques. You’ll see the Florence Cathedral (a.k.a. “The Duomo”) and Michelangelo’s David on Day 5. Consider an optional five-course dinner (extra fee) that night includes homemade pasta and unlimited wine.

    Days 6–8: Assisi, Rome

Accommodations: 4-star Grand Hotel Palatino in Rome

Before making its final stop in Rome, the tour will head to Assisi, a hillside town in Italy’s Umbria region famous for The Basilica of Saint Francis. The church’s interior is covered in frescos by great Renaissance painter Giotto, including the 28 scenes of the Life of St. Francis that Frommer’s says “moves the devout to tears and art lovers to fits of near-religious ecstasy.”

A walking tour of Rome on Day 7 begins at the Vatican Museums in Saint Peter’s Square. Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, and sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini are among the masterpieces you’ll see here.

You’ll have the rest of the day to explore the city on your own. For an authentic Roman experience, snack on kosher artichokes in the Roman Ghetto, or enjoy a picnic in the Villa Borghese.
