Highlights

Wat Po in Bangkok: Also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, this 17th-century temple houses a gold statue of the Buddha lying on his side that measures 150 feet—about half the length of a football field—from head to toe.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, southwest of Bangkok: Villagers and farmers navigate this market’s crowded canals in small sampan boats in order to trade fruits, vegetables, and housewares with shoppers on the banks of the waterway.

The Bridge on the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi: During World War II, Allied POWs were forced to build a railroad from Thailand to Burma so the Japanese could safely send military supplies by land. Many died during construction, which led to the railroad’s nickname, “Death Railway.” The story was made famous in the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai, and the bridge is still used by passenger trains today.

Bang Pa-In Royal Palace in Ayutthaya: A royal summer palace for Thai kings, this early 17th-century estate sits just outside of Ayutthaya, which was once Thailand’s capital. The palace fell into disrepair but was restored to its former glory in the mid-1800s. It’s still occasionally used by the current king and queen as a residence and reception hall.
