Coastal Resort on UNESCO Nature Preserve

Located on the western coast of Jalisco, Hotelito Desconocido is surrounded by a bright-blue lagoon, fragrant fruit trees, and miles of sandy beaches. They’re all part of a nature preserve listed by UNESCO as an aquifer paradise for birds—more than 150 different species make their home here. You’ll see pelicans, herons, and several others on the bird-watching tour included in this getaway.

To see even more local wildlife, head to the deck of your palafito, a thatched house on stilts that extends into the lagoon. Each palafito has a unique name such as La Pera (“the pear”) or La Chalupa (“the boat”) and decor to match. All are constructed with natural wood and stone with hand-painted accents and have panoramic views of the preserve and surrounding ocean.

The hotel’s spa also takes advantage of the seaside locale with thalassotherapy treatments, which employ the medicinal properties of seawater in steam rooms and saltwater pools. At the beach, you can kayak, fish, or ride horseback along the surf—the hotel has its own stables.

Two onsite restaurants serve local Mexican dishes prepared with fresh seafood and produce from the hotel’s organic garden. The chefs use fresh eggs and milk from onsite chicken and cow pens, which help Hotelito Desconocido to be as self-sustaining as possible.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: Tropical Paradise with Cosmopolitan Flair

Puerto Vallarta is perhaps Mexico’s most sophisticated vacation destination, with expansive beaches, trendy restaurants, and cobblestone streets leading to beautifully preserved 19th-century churches. A 16-block boardwalk known as the malecón offers unobstructed ocean views as it extends from the city center, past fountains and a famous 9-foot-high statue of a boy riding a seahorse.

Called “the most gay-friendly city in Mexico” by Frommer’s, Vallarta draws a diverse crowd of vacationers intent on relaxing during the day and living it up at night, bouncing between the city’s numerous dance clubs and bouncy castles. For a glimpse of the city's history, head to Viejo Vallarta, also known as Old Town, where artists peddle shawls and piñatas and mariachi bands serenade couples dancing on Plaza Principal.
