Sweeping Pacific Views from Olympic National Park Lodge

Kalaloch Lodge is set on a bluff overlooking miles of Pacific beaches dotted with weathered driftwood. Standing alone on this stretch of coastline, the stately Kalaloch Lodge is located on the western boundary of Olympic National Park and its nearly one million acres of pine forests, waterfalls, and quiet brooks.

South of the main lodge, you’ll find the Seacrest building, where rooms boast private balconies with sweeping views of the Pacific. Situated a few hundred feet from the edge of Kalaloch’s bluff, the Kalaloch cabins are equipped with kitchenettes and Franklin wood-stove fireplaces. Rooms have neither phones nor TVs, but you won’t miss them—the natural setting is so spectacular you’ll want to be outside as much as possible. Within both types of accommodations, there are included beach guides and walking sticks to help you plot and execute forays into the landscape.

At Kalaloch’s Creekside Restaurant, the emphasis is on local and sustainable Pacific Northwestern fare. You can try grilled king salmon for dinner and buckwheat-walnut pancakes for breakfast. Snacks, coffee, ice cream, and other groceries are available for purchase at the Kalaloch Mercantile, a general store connected to the lodge.

Kalaloch, Washington: Acres of Protected Wilderness and Marine Life

Located about a three-hour drive west of Seattle, Kalaloch Lodge stands on the tip of the westernmost point of the contiguous United States. In one direction lie miles of secluded beaches where you can dig for tasty razor clams and fish for rainbow trout. And in the other direction, you face the rainforests and mountains of Olympic National Park. This protected natural wilderness encompasses sixty glaciers, 3,000 miles of rivers, and 600 miles of twisting hiking and biking trails. Don’t miss the temperate Hoh Rainforest, a peaceful area filled with mossy trees and near-total coverage of leaves overhead.

Right outside the door of Kalaloch Lodge—part of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary—you can explore colorful tidal pools on the beach that form unique marine-life microcosms. Be on the lookout for sea stars and sea urchins as well as scene-stealing elephant seals and sea otters. You may even see puffins, gray whales, and bald eagles.
