We’ve listed some of our favorite highlights below. Click here to see the full itinerary and trip details.
Days 1–3: Madrid
Accommodations: The 4-star Hotel Husa Princesa, featuring glamorous guest rooms decorated with large prints of Prado masterpieces
Spain’s capital city is an intoxicating blend of fine-art museums, late-night dance clubs, and mouth-watering tapas. While night owls thrive here, the city is just as enchanting during the day. On Day 3, you can take the included hop-on, hop-off bus tour, which will take you past the Royal Palace and the Puerta del Sol—a public square considered the center of Spain. You might also want to make time for some shoe shopping on Augusto Figueroa, and a stroll through the rose gardens at Parque del Oeste.
Madrid boasts some of Europe’s most-impressive art collections. The Museo del Prado, a neoclassical fixture on the city’s famed Golden Triangle of Art, displays nearly 7,000 paintings, including masterpieces by Botticelli, Raphael, Goya, and El Greco. Walk down the street to Museo Reina Sofia, which focuses on 20th- and 21st-century art, including work by Salvador Dali and Joan Miro. Reina Sofia is best known as the site of Guernica, Picasso’s masterful response to the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
Days 4–7: Barcelona
Accommodations: Hotel Barcelona Center, located a 10-minute walk from Plaza de Cataluña, is home to a renowned Spanish restaurant.
On Day 4, you’ll leave Madrid and board a high-speed train to Barcelona. Set on the Mediterranean, this cosmopolitan city (and capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia) is sprinkled with eye-catching diversions, including ancient churches, verdant parks, and avant-garde cuisine. Catalan native Antoni Gaudi left his mark on the city with the Sagrada Familia, a stunning, beehive-like basilica with towers rising more than 300 feet. Outside, ornate protuberances comprise a stone tapestry of Christ’s life.
While here, you can explore the city during Day 5’s hop-on, hop-off bus tour, at your leisure, or via optional tours such as a visit to the whimsical Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres. Cutting through the middle of Barcelona is Las Ramblas, one of the world’s most-famous boulevards. The mile-long walkway bustles with vibrant flower stalls, fortune tellers, and La Boqueria, the city’s centuries-old market. You’ll see a different side of Barcelona just north of here in the Barri Gotic neighborhood. The city’s medieval heart, its narrow alleyways and secluded squares are home to ornate Gothic buildings and The Picasso Museum.
