Four-Star Villas on Quiet Beach in Riviera Maya
Las Villas Akumal’s thatched villas are just a few steps from the Caribbean Sea in the coastal town of Akumal, about 66 miles south of Cancún. The small resort town is just a half hour’s drive from the activities and nightlife of Playa del Carmen, but it’s far enough away to feel quiet and secluded. Here, white-sand beaches are lined with swaying palm trees, bars, and small coral reefs teeming with tropical fish. You can borrow snorkeling gear to explore these underwater ecosystems or hop in a kayak—the resort rents out both for free.
All of the villas have fully stocked kitchens; ocean-view villas also have private terraces set with hammock chairs and patio furniture. Some overlook the beachside pool area, which is surrounded by shaded lounge chairs. Farther out, you can go scuba diving along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which stretches along the entire Yucatán Peninsula and shelters five species of sea turtles and one of the world’s largest congregations of whale sharks.
The area is also home to a number of Mayan archeological sites, including the ruins of Tulum, located just a half hour’s drive from the hotel. Tulum is believed to have been one of the most important cities of the ancient Maya. Today, you can still see the remnants of frescoes inside some of the structures.
