Resort with Tropical Pool near World-Class Surfing
During the California gold rush, would-be prospectors often passed through San Juan del Sur, a shipping town on Nicaragua’s western coast, where they would catch a boat to California. Nowadays, the village is prized for its waves rather than the ships that once rode them. Dozens of beaches dot the coastline, each with a roaring surf break. Just north of San Juan del Sur and about 10 minutes inland, the Mango Rosa Nicaragua resort forms a home base for surfing trips and other adventures throughout the region.
At the resort’s surf school, instructors intimately familiar with local shores lead excursions to the best breaks and teach intro lessons on body positioning. With the adventure package (included with options four, five, and six), you can participate in two excursions, such as a horseback-riding tour of local beaches. Other choices include a guided jungle hike to beaches featured on Survivor: Nicaragua and Survivor: Redemption Island and a tour of San Juan del Sur.
Back at the hotel, a lagoon-style pool offers a more low-key chance to take a dip. Thanks to a sloped entryway and rounded ledges, the pool blends into the surrounding foliage of fruit trees, palms, and blooming bougainvillea. Standalone one-bedroom bungalows hide throughout the 7-acre grounds, each equipped with a private terrace, vaulted ceilings, rattan furniture, and a full kitchen.
The onsite Grand Rancho Bar/Restaurant serves American and Nicaraguan favorites. Along with local beers and Flor de Caña rum, the eatery serves up casual eats such as chicken fajitas and filet mignon sandwiches topped with mango and avocado.
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua: Isthmus of Jungle with Surf-Friendly Bays
Since San Juan del Sur’s surfing boom in the 1990s, the surrounding region has become popular with backpackers due to its jungle-lined coves and inexpensive lifestyle. Between trips to the beach, Lake Nicaragua, located about 30 minutes inland, is worth a visit. Here, hundreds of tiny islands formed by the Mombacho Volcano dot the vast freshwater surface. You can also sail out to the much larger Ometepe Island, home to the active Concepción Volcano and full of howler monkeys eager to discuss the latest edition of Curious George.
