Victorian B&B Across the Street from a 48-Acre Park

Mildred’s Bed and Breakfast is located in the heart of Seattle’s Capitol Hill district, right across the street from Volunteer Park. Within the 48-acre park, paved walking paths wend past tennis courts, outdoor sculptures, and a historic water tower that you can climb for spectacular views of the city. Inside the Volunteer Park Conservatory, you can stroll through greenhouses stocked with cacti, orchids, and colorful bromeliads all year long.

The bed and breakfast looks out onto the park from a large wraparound porch. Originally built in 1890, the double-turreted Victorian home still has lots of historical charm, including stained-glass windows and antiques throughout. Each of the home’s four guest rooms features a different decorating scheme, but all contain period furniture, private bathrooms, and large windows that let in plenty of light. In the morning, head to the main dining room for a light breakfast of fresh fruit, sweet rolls, and oatmeal.

Capitol Hill, Seattle: Thriving Arts Scene and Lots of Public Parks

Located a few blocks northeast of downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill is a sprawling neighborhood with stately Craftsman and Victorian mansions and a thriving arts scene. Take a stroll down Broadway Avenue East to check out the neighborhood’s many art galleries, vintage-clothing shops, and coffeehouses; while you’re here, pay your respects to a bronze statue of Jimi Hendrix, one of the city’s most notorious past residents. In the spring, summer, and fall, the avenue hosts a popular farmers' market where you can pick up fresh produce and artisanal foods.

Capitol Hill has lots of public parks that are open year-round. Cal Anderson Park, located just one block west of Broadway, contains a lighted sports field and several oversize concrete chessboards. Head a mile north to Volunteer Park, where you can visit the Seattle Asian Art Museum or climb a historic water tower to get a 360-degree view of Seattle.

The neighborhood is also home to much of Seattle's sizable LGBT community. Each October, it hosts the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival at Three Dollar Bill Cinema, a nonprofit organization that shows films by, for, and about LGBT people. The festival attracts more than 10,000 attendees each year.
