Tropical Bayside Resort with Onsite Diving and Fishing

Playa del Coco, situated along Papagayo Gulf on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, has become a popular destination for sportfishing and scuba diving. Both tourists and ticos—local Costa Ricans—head to the dive shops lining the beach during the day. At night they return to shore for calypso and disco dancing.

Ocotal Beach Resort & Hotel is situated a few minutes to the southwest of this spot on Playa Ocotal—a stretch of chocolate-colored sand framed by volcanic bluffs. It boasts a secluded setting and easy access to the ocean. The resort also has its own PADI-certified dive school and offers deep-sea-fishing charters—just two of the reasons why Frommer's called Ocotal "the most luxurious and complete resort hotel in the Playa del Coco area."

Diving excursions take you to nearby islands in search of bull sharks and giant mantas. On fishing trips, you may hook 40- to 100-pound catches, including marlin, mahi-mahi, and roosterfish, named for their flashy dorsal fins. Or you can simply lounge by one of the resort's pools, which include a lagoon-style infinity pool that seems to meld with the horizon.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica: National Parks Flanked by Forested Volcanoes

Guanacaste, which forms the northwestern province of Costa Rica, takes its name from the guanacaste tree, an umbrella-shaped plant also known by a less appealing name—the ear-pod tree. These trees blanket the slopes of the Guanacaste and Tilaran Mountains, sheltering the coastline from rainstorms and thus keeping the beaches fairly warm and dry all year round.

The bustling nightlife at Playa del Coco is just a short drive away, but it's worth heading farther afield to take in some of the surrounding national parks. Half an hour south, Marino las Baulas National Park serves as a major nesting ground for leatherback turtles starting in October. To the north, Santa Rosa National Park is known for its legendary surf breaks, including one made famous by the documentary Endless Summer II.

Getting there from Playa de Coco in blinding rain was difficult. I did not have good directions.

The grounds could have been better maintained, but everything else was great. No complaints about our bungalow, they were very helpful and friendly to host.

We enjoyed our time at Ocotal Beach Resort. The rooms weren't fancy, but we didn't need them to be. The beach was practically a private one and not difficult to get to at all. We enjoyed our stay very much and would go back again.
