The Trip

You'll fly over the Pacific en route to Fiji aboard an economy-class Air Pacific flight. Once you touch down in the city of Nadi, you'll be transferred to Outrigger on the Lagoon • Fiji, an exotic seaside resort that will be your headquarters for the duration of your stay on the island.

The Resort

Fodor’s calls Outrigger on the Lagoon a "one-stop holiday”; indeed, the resort has enough on its 40 acres that it could pass as its own village. Dozens of thatch-roof bungalows and buildings are scattered amid placid lily ponds and palm trees. They’re all just steps from the Pacific Ocean; deluxe ocean-view rooms have nice views of the water from their balconies.

The upscale Ivi Restaurant spotlights Fijian entrees and sits next to a century-old tree. Try Vakavanua Lounge for tapas and live music, or dine on Australian beef by the ocean at Sundowner Bar.

Perched atop what locals call Heaven Hill is Bebe Spa. The spa features open-air treatment rooms and offers a host of traditional Fijian treatments, including massages and exfoliations infused with pineapple and papaya.

The Experience

Around Outrigger on the Lagoon, the water is almost as clear as glass. You can rent snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and kayaks for free from the resort to check out the surf.

The resort also hosts events that highlight Fijian ceremonies and culture, including the meke, a traditional dance. In the kava ceremony, a rite of passage for many visitors to Fiji, you can sip a peppery Polynesian drink.

Sigatoka, Fiji: Sand Dunes, Ancient Pottery, and Fresh Produce

Sigatoka sits on the southwest coast of Fiji's Viti Levu Island, bordered by the Sigatoka River and the South Pacific Ocean. The year-round balmy climate and geography here are ideal for growing fruits and vegetables; the lush surrounding valley is fondly called Fiji's salad bowl.

At Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, you can spot fruit bats, geckos, and other exotic animals. The dunes also hold historical significance—archaeologists uncovered an extensive collection of Lapita pottery that dates back almost 3,000 years. At Nakabuta, a tiny village just a few miles away, you can buy modern Fijian pottery and handmade crafts from local artisans.
