Visit Guatemala City, Colonial Antigua, and Chichicastenango Market
On this five-day tour of Guatemala, you'll explore colorful Chichicastenango Market, take a boat ride on Lake Atitlán, tour the capital, Guatemala City, and visit the city of Colonial Antigua, which Fodor's calls “one of Latin America's loveliest cities,” thanks to its many well-preserved Spanish colonial buildings. This package includes nightly accommodations and roundtrip airfare from Miami International Airport (MIA) via AviancaTaca airlines.
We’ve outlined some of the trip highlights below. Click here to see a more detailed itinerary.
Days 1–2: Chichicastenango Market
Upon arrival, you’ll check into the Barceló Guatemala City hotel, in the heart of Guatemala City. The tour kicks off the following day at Chichicastenango Market. This colorful open-air market is a feast for the senses. You can smell the heady scent of copal incense as you stroll along the cobblestone streets, which are often filled with traditional mask carvers and street musicians playing native folk songs. Local vendors set up stalls selling everything from handwoven baskets to sugar-cane rum, a regional favorite.
Days 3–5: Atitlán, Colonial Antigua, Guatemala City
You’ll travel about an hour south to take an early-morning boat trip on Lake Atitlán, which writer Aldous Huxley once praised as "too much of a good thing," due to its breathtaking setting near volcanoes and villages of the indigenous people. Before heading back to Guatemala City, the tour makes a pit stop at Colonial Antigua for some more sightseeing. Colonial Antigua is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Spanish colonial architecture, some of which dates back to the 16th century. One of the most stunning buildings in town is the Cathedral of St. John, which features 70-foot-high cupolas, bronze icons, and imposing iron gates.
