Contemporary Hotel Close to Beach and City Center

In 1964, John Huston filmed Night of the Iguana with star Richard Burton in Puerto Vallarta. At the time, Elizabeth Taylor was having an affair with Burton, and the two created a media storm when she flew to the city to keep him company on set. The coverage inadvertently shined a spotlight on Puerto Vallarta's stunning beaches and bay, causing a boom for tourism in the small fishing village. Today, it's home to a lively town square and beachfront boardwalk lined with salsa dance clubs and handicraft shops. The centrally located Hotel Portonovo Plaza, only two blocks from the boardwalk and a one-minute walk from the beach, is adjacent to all of this action.

The hotel reflects Puerto Vallarta's modernity with its marble floors, black and red accents, and rounded chairs that surround a lobby bar. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in a white-walled restaurant with wide windows that look out onto the city. The contemporary look continues throughout the soundproof superior rooms, decorated with recessed tiled walls, leather chairs, and sentient ceiling fans. Head upstairs to the rooftop pool and terrace for views of the Pacific.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: Tropical Paradise with Cosmopolitan Flair

Puerto Vallarta is perhaps Mexico’s most sophisticated vacation destination, with expansive beaches, trendy restaurants, and cobblestone streets leading to beautifully preserved 19th-century churches. A 16-block boardwalk known as the malecón offers unobstructed ocean views as it extends from the city center, past fountains and a famous 9-foot-high statue of a boy riding a seahorse.

Called “the most gay-friendly city in Mexico” by Frommer’s, Vallarta draws a diverse crowd of vacationers intent on relaxing during the day and living it up at night, bouncing between the city’s numerous dance clubs and bouncy castles. For a glimpse of the city's history, head to Viejo Vallarta, also known as Old Town, where artists peddle shawls and piñatas and mariachi bands serenade couples dancing on Plaza Principal.

The staff at the hotel was absolutely horrible. I never even got the chance to use the groupon. It expired but they refused to honor the price I paid for it.

The taxes added were unexpected. The staff was friendly and helpful for the most part. Room was small. No fridge or microwave. It was okay though. Plenty of shopping around. Close to the beach.
