Private Casitas Amid a Verdant Tropical Paradise

Local legend says the Rio Celeste—which translates to "light-blue river" in Spanish—obtained its baby-blue hue after God painted the sky and washed the brushes in the stream below. Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel is set near the banks of this waterway, nestled within the Costa Rican rainforest's lush vegetation. The eco-themed resort is so entrenched in ferns, palms, and bromeliads that it often attracts local wildlife, including a sloth that the staff has nicknamed "Sophia."

The resort centers around its pool, a curving lagoon framed by palm fronds. At night, red, green, and purple bulbs transform the hot tubs and inlets into an underwater light show. Although only a few steps away, the 26 standalone casitas seem hidden amid the forest. Each extends to a private backyard, where you can rinse off in an outdoor shower. Inside, dark wood furniture carved with leaves and floral motifs complements ornamental masks, thatched roofing, and colorful hanging lanterns. Past the jacuzzi and plasma TV, there's a sliding glass door that overlooks the Costa Rican jungle.

Each morning kicks off with breakfast at the open-air Kantala Restaurante, which blends traditional Costa Rican and international cuisine. Tours explore the Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna (about a two-hour drive away), nearby Tenorio National Park, and the parakeets, toucans, and hawks on bird-watching excursions. Or, stay at the resort and and indulge in your included couple's massage.

Alajuela Province, Costa Rica: Jungle Pierced by Volcanic Hot Springs

Set along the border of the Costa Rican provinces Alajuela and Guanacaste, Tenorio Volcano National Park is right on the resort's doorstep. The Rio Celeste meanders through the park, turning white with froth as it tumbles down the 30-foot Rio Celeste waterfall. Natural hot springs steam along the slopes of the Tenorio Volcano.

Nearby, Costa Rica's most active volcano looms over Arenal Volcano National Park, where hot springs have become tourist draws with swim-up bars and water slides. Within the park, a densely forested trail leads up the side of Cerro Chato, a 3,700-foot volcano that has been dormant since it ate too much at a recent Thanksgiving.
