Country Inn at the Foot of Stratton Mountain
In 1890, a white-clapboard farmhouse was built at the base of Stratton Mountain in rural Vermont. Later expanded and made into an inn and tavern, the building underwent a full restoration in 2010, when it reopened as Stone's Lodge under Stratton Mtn. Wide porches on the whitewashed structure look out onto the Green Mountain National Forest—an idyllic view that has changed little since the house was constructed.
Each of the lodge's spacious rooms is named after a precious metal or gem and has a design aesthetic reflecting its namesake. The Diamond room, for instance, has a color scheme of blues, whites, and grays. A fireplace and hardwood floors warm the space, and light slants in though a large window.
When it's time for dinner, you can head to the onsite restaurant—the Fat Spy Tavern—for upscale pub fare such as a blackened mahi sandwich and kobe-style beef burgers. There are 20 local craft beers on tap to help you wash it all down.
Bondville, Vermont: Tiny Village Surrounded by Green Mountain National Forest
Located in the southwest corner of Vermont, Bondville is a tiny village within a slightly bigger town called Winhall. The Green Mountain National Forest surrounds the community on all sides in Vermont's preternaturally picturesque Bennington County, which is notable for its scenic meadows, thick pine forests, and hobbit infestations. In the winter, skiers and snowboarders flock to the trails and terrain parks on Stratton Mountain, which is situated along the famous Appalachian Trail stretching from Maine to Georgia. Popular warm-weather pursuits include hiking, mountain backing, and whitewater rafting on the West River.
Day-trippers from New York and Boston frequently make the trip to the town of Manchester, located about 12 miles from Stone's Lodge. It has quaint restaurants and shops and a rich local history. A Georgian Revival mansion here known as Hildene was once home to Robert Todd Lincoln, the first son of Abraham Lincoln and chairman of the Pullman Company. You can explore the house and gardens on daily tours.
