Family-Friendly Resort in Canadian Rockies

At The Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino, you can try your luck at hundreds of slot machines or set your kids loose to zip down a water slide. The Canadian Rockies, which Fodor's called "one of the most extravagantly beautiful ranges on Earth,” serve as backdrop for the resort. Less than an hour away, you can find mirror-like glacial lakes and frozen waterfalls at Banff National Park. Nakiska Mountain Resort, which played host to the 1988 Winter Olympics, is also nearby.

In the resort’s guest rooms, you'll be treated to panoramic vistas of the Canadian Rockies or an Alberta sunrise. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs and Serta mattresses. Thursday–Sunday evenings, The Ridge Buffet serves up a rotating selection of salads, roasted meats, and fresh seafood.

Back in the casino, you can play blackjack or roulette and participate in a weekly poker tournament. At the resort's Sidelines Lounge, five plasma TVs broadcasts pay-per-view events as visitors dine on nachos, steaks, and wings accompanied by a wide selection of beers.

Kananaskis Village, Alberta: World-Class Ski Resort, Waterfall Ice Climbing, and Glacial Caves

At the base of the Canadian Rockies, Alberta's Kananaskis County is well situated for year-round outdoor adventures. After the first heavy snowfall, skiers and snowboarders descend on Nakiska Mountain Resort in droves. The former Olympic skiing site boasts exhilarating downhill runs as well as a rail park. Farther west, in Banff, ice climbers brave a number of frozen waterfalls, including the breathtaking Johnston Canyon Falls.

You can explore a different side of the mountain in the nearby village of Canmore, located less than an hour from the resort. Here you can take tours of Rat's Nest Cave any time of year. You'll don a headlight to tunnel through dark limestone passageways carved centuries ago by glacial runoff. Aboveground, the former mining community is now filled with boutiques, art galleries, and brewpubs.
