We and the group we were with found the gentleman who had an office inside the hotel who offered excursions is not the most honest and is not customer service oriented. He scammed some in our group and when confronted with it denied he did wrong.

Set in downtown San Pedro, this oceanfront hotel is walking distance to shops and restaurants and has sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea

Hotel at a Glance: SunBreeze Suites

Situated directly on the beach on the east side of Belize’s Ambergris Caye island, SunBreeze Suites manages to feel like a private oasis while still being in the center of the island’s main town, San Pedro. At this sunny stucco-and-tile hotel, you’ll be able to choose your entertainment—walk into town to go dancing and shop or stroll a few steps to the beach for a seaside day in the sun. Each of the hotel’s ocean-view suites feels more like a tropical apartment than a hotel room, and you can head downstairs to the pool to lounge on deck chairs and sip drinks at the patio bar.

  • Walking distance to: The beachy shops, restaurants, and bars of San Pedro, the largest town on Ambergris Caye. The hotel is located in downtown San Pedro, a former fishing village where locals use golf carts to get around.
  • Go swimming: Splash into the curvy pool behind the hotel, lounge at the patio bar with a fruity cocktail, or go for a dip in the sea, steps away from the hotel.
  • A room with a view: Ocean-view suites have private balconies that directly overlook the beach, docks, and the Caribbean Sea.
  • Nifty in-room amenities: Each ocean-view suite has a fully equipped kitchen with a stove and a refrigerator, as well as a living and dining area and separate bedrooms. They’re decorated tropically, with bright paintings and wicker furniture.
  • Hot tip: Explore the Lamanai Mayan ruins or book a cave-tubing ride with the front desk, where the staff is experienced with choosing packages for guests looking to take tours, snorkel, and scuba dive.

Ambergris Caye, Belize: Small Island near World’s Second-Largest Barrier Reef

Recognized by Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the World’s Best Islands in 2011, Ambergris Caye sits just off the northeastern coast of mainland Belize. By law, none of the island's buildings can be taller than the highest coco palm, which helps create a serene, unspoiled vibe. The entire island is only about 25 miles long and 1 mile wide, but its varied ecosystems range from low sand ridges to lagoons and mangrove swamps.

Hop aboard a speedboat or glass-bottom boat to reach the Belize Barrier Reef, which lies about 10 minutes away. It's part of the second-longest barrier reef in the world and was designated an UNESCO World Heritage site for its biological diversity. The reef shelters a remarkable variety of sea life, including nearly 500 species of fish and rare, massive West Indian manatees that can reach the size of a compact car.

The town of San Pedro is situated on Ambergris’s southern end. Formerly a small fishing village, it’s now home to various boutiques, which stock artisan crafts ranging from ziricote woodcarvings to Guatemalan jewelry.
