The resort is unfinished - many of the amenities and activities advertised in the groupon were not offered or did not exist during our stay. The staff coordinated activities very poorly and we kissed two excursions as a result of their lapse in communication. I would definitely not recommend this to someone unless they are looking to stay in a hostel with private rooms. That is essentially what this place is all about.

Fun-Filled Resort with Skateboard Park and Surfing Adventures

When you consider all that Surf Ranch Action Sports Resorts has to offer—private surfing lessons, the largest skateboard park in the country, a two-story restaurant—it’s hard to believe it all began with a case of beer and a Google search for “cheap land for sale.” Just one year after that fateful query, brothers Lucas and Travis Boychuk were chopping down 10-foot-tall grass with machetes on a 2-acre lot in Nicaragua. The parcel of land the brothers purchased is today the site of a fun-filled resort offering a range of extreme sports as well as excursions into the surrounding jungle and to nearby oceanside cliffs (the included activity credit can be applied toward these experiences). Complimentary meals and unlimited drinks keep guests fueled for nonstop adventure.

The resort is located in the town of San Juan del Sur, one of the top surfing destinations in the country. During private surf lessons ($45+) at one of the local beaches, professional rider Oliver Soliz takes students of all levels into the waves and offers a 100% guarantee that they’ll get up on their boards the first day. Tours on offer include rappelling down a 100-meter rock wall ($42) and dancing and drinking the day away on a catamaran beach cruise ($60+). Back at the hotel, tower-jumping platforms and a world-class skateboard park are open for tricks and stunts.

When guests aren’t boosting their adrenaline, they’re usually at the hotel pool drinking free rum and cokes or lounging in poolside cabanas. A full-service bar and restaurant serves complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as free beer. The resort’s jungle villas feature private rooftop lounges, and the condos come with stone walls and private bathrooms.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua: Undisturbed Tropical Wildlife and Popular Surf Spots

Situated on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, San Juan del Sur has been a favorite of in-the-know surfers for years thanks to year-round warm waters. Many head straight to the white-sand Playa Maderas. There, surf shops dot the streets closest to the beach, offering lessons and boards for beginners and veterans alike. Farther offshore, the waters are calmer and filled with marlin, yellow tuna, and snapper—thus attracting deep-sea fishers and snorkelers.

Though most of the action takes place along San Juan del Sur's crescent-shaped bay, the gorgeous scenery inland is also worth exploring. About an hour-and-a-half drive north of San Juan del Sur lie the Mombacho and Masaya volcanoes. The 4,000-foot Mombacho is dormant, but one of the Masaya craters still emits smoke and gas. Zipline tours cut through the canopies of a tropical forest, where you can listen as resident howler monkeys auction off treehouses.
