Whitewashed Victorian Home a Short Walk from the Beach
The Hamptons have justly earned a reputation as the preferred summer vacation destination of notable New Yorkers, such as Steven Spielberg and Martha Stewart. The small villages and hamlets along Long Island’s South Fork are dotted with rolling dunes, unspoiled beaches, and multimillion-dollar mansions. On the edge of Westhampton Beach, within a mile of the shore, sits The Grassmere Inn, a whitewashed Victorian inn with a wraparound porch. The inn is home to 36 newly renovated guest rooms, each with warm quilts, lots of windows, and a private or shared bathroom.
The innkeepers provide transportation to and from the nearby Eastside Tennis Academy—with Option 2 or 3, you get two tennis lessons and one racquet restringing at the academy. The center of town is also within walking distance. Here, you’ll find a charming square lined with restaurants, a movie theater, and the Westhampton Performing Arts Center. The inn also offers a continental breakfast of bagels, yogurt, muffins, juices, and coffee, as well as afternoon beverages on the porch. Breakfast is only served until September, 3rd.
The Hamptons: Long Island's Glamorous Seaside Destination
About 75 to 100 miles east of Manhattan, on the South Fork of Long Island, lies a string of sophisticated beach towns collectively known as the Hamptons. The area includes the towns of Southampton and East Hampton, plus a series of smaller, picturesque villages and hamlets (not all necessarily ending with "hampton"). During the summertime, the area, which is known for its peaceful beaches and a glamorous social scene, regularly draws a privileged crowd. In cooler months, the population shrinks, and it’s relatively quiet here; spend days beachcombing, shopping for farm-fresh produce, or strolling past the giant mansions that line the seaside.
Because they’re clustered together, it’s easy to visit several towns in the Hamptons during your stay. Westhampton Beach is known for its busy Main Street, populated by boutiques, cafes, and Zagat-rated restaurants, and Frommer’s calls the village’s beaches “some of the best on Long Island.” In neighboring Eastport, antique stores abound, and in Southampton, you’ll find several historic estates and chic shops. Trendy East Hampton is home to top-tier restaurants and celebrity mansions, including those of Jerry Seinfeld and Billy Joel.
