Industry experts break down filmmaking & comedy scribing through intense & engaging one- or two-day workshops

Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard once said, “The cinema is truth at 24 frames per second,” making slow-motion sports replays and sped-up Benny Hill gags nothing but cruel, cruel lies. Get the real deal with today’s Groupon to Raindance Toronto. Choose between the following options:

  • For $69, you get a one-day introductory filmmaking course with Elliot Grove on Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (a $249 value).
  • For $99, you get a two-day comedy-writing course with Steve Kaplan on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27 (a $349 value).<p>

Raindance’s practical filmmaking and writing workshops break the daunting cinema-creation process into digestible lectures, as industry professionals lead talks to elevate the aptitude of independent filmmakers and artists. During Raindance founder Elliot Grove’s introductory film school, the prolific producer delves into the essentials of screenplay writing, production, directing, and distribution options. Various lectures and a supportive handbook allow students to glean the knowledge needed to convert the fancy-dancing and slow-punching scenes of youthful cinemaginations into a script filled with plausible characters and plot holes arranged into a looping tunnel that critics will never escape. The action-packed day concludes with a networking session at a local bar where participants can trade business cards to further their cinematic pursuits.

Alternatively, during HBO consultant Steve Kaplan’s two-day comedy intensive workshop, budding punch-line pundits dissect how to achieve humour through jokes, metaphorical relationships, active emotion, and comic premise. By day two, pupils analyze scripts and explore the annotated screenplay for Groundhog Day over and over and over again. Kaplan will also preside over a Q&A session so participants can address lingering concerns or test original knock-knock jokes.

Instructor was excellent enough to recommend. However, the venue was so hot and airless that it was an effort to concentrate on the otherwise excellent programme. I was almost nauseous while in that room. Also, Raindance staff walked in and out of the room during the presentation and were conducting other business on laptops, accessing the fridge and kitchen cupboards during the event. This was distracting. Was it really necessary when there was another Raindance office right next door which also had a kitchen?
