Usually watching everything get turned upside down is a bad thing, unless you're practicing suspension yoga or are a cold, wet sock taking a spin in the dryer. Feel warm and fuzzy inside with this Groupon.

Choose from Three Options

  • $29 for 10 drop-in yoga classes (a $110 value)
  • $20 for an Introduction to Suspension Yoga workshop for one (a $40 value)
  • $38 for an Introduction to Suspension Yoga workshop for two (an $80 value)

The drop-in classes may be used toward any of the traditional yoga classes, including gentle hatha flow or introduction to ashtanga. The two-hour Introduction to Suspension Yoga workshops explore spine decompression and core strengthening as students learn aerial poses in the hanging OmGym Suspension System. This workshop is a prerequisite to all of The Flying Yogi's suspension classes. During summer months, yoga classes move outdoors to nearby parks, check out the locations and schedule here.

The Flying Yogi

After learning yoga in India and then pursuing a teaching career that has lasted more than a quarter-century, Beatrix Montanile wasn't expecting to be surprised by anything about the practice. But one day in 2009, she saw her first demonstration of suspension yoga, a technique that finds students cradled in colorful slings that hang from the ceiling. She was so amazed and intrigued by it that by the following year, she opened one of the first suspension yoga studios in Canada, The Flying Yogi. Because of the slings, bodies are raised off the floor, giving them absolute range of motion. This in turn allows for the use of inverted poses, which has many benefits. Positioning the body upside down can boost oxygenation of the brain, activate lymphatic drainage, decompress the spine, joints, and organs, and finally show the soles of your feet what a ceiling looks like. The effects of this unorthodox method are widespread: it can improve posture, encourage deeper sleep, and relieve chronic ailments such as headache or back pain.

The Flying Yogi offers a range of infrared yoga classes as well, with heat ranging from 28 to 40 degrees Celsius. In addition to providing strong yoga fundamentals with strength, body awareness, and breath, regular exposure to infrared light-rays has been shown to help with symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Infrared yoga also helps detoxify, increase circulation, and promote weight loss among many other benefits.

Beatrix and her team use OmGym suspension systems, versatile slings made from recycled parachute nylon with an attached pair of handles for added stability. Over the past few years Beatrix has developed a partnership with OmGym inventor Sarah Kellett, and the pair co-host teacher-training workshops at The Flying Yogi. The schedule also includes infrared yoga. This new style of hot yoga uses special infrared rays for a safer and more therapeutic experience, with benefits including detoxification and increased circulation. The studio even provides Thai massage to supplement students' physical wellbeing.
