Jun 26, 2018

Fried chicken

It's already hot enough in Arizona—you don't need to eat anywhere where the check makes you sweat too. With that in mind, we put together a list of restaurants in Phoenix where you can get an amazing meal for under $15. From gourmet hot dogs to giant pastrami sandwiches, here are our "Cheap Eats Phoenix" champions:

1. Danish Dog at DK Dog's

4700 N. 12th St. | Camelback East

Danish dog

There's no mistaking the Danish dog for anything else: it comes with a mini Danish flag planted in the middle. It's also topped with a tasty mix of remoulade, fried onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup, and its popularity helped the business grow from a single hot dog cart to multiple carts plus its current storefront space. $4 for a regular, $6 for an XL.

2. Peking Duck Tacos at Taco Guild

546 E. Osborn Rd. | Encanto Village

The Taco Guild menu is neatly divided into traditional "Old World" and inventive "New World" tacos, and these duck tacos fall squarely in the latter camp. Each bite delivers crisp duck, sweet plum sauce, tangy roasted poblano apricot compote, and creamy brie. $4.95 per taco.

3. Poke Bowl at Poke Catcher

49 W. Thomas Rd. | Encanto Village

Poke bowl

This build-your-own-bowl concept opened in 2017 just as the Hawaiian poke trend was reaching liftoff. Fill your bowl with proteins like spicy ahi tuna, salmon, or shrimp, then toss on toppings raning from avocado to crab slaw to wasabi. $8.95 for a medium bowl with two proteins.

4. Fried Chicken at The Horny Toad

6738 E. Cave Creek Rd. | Cave Creek

This restaurant on the northern outskirts of Greater Phoenix estimates it's served more than two million pounds of its acclaimed fried chicken in its 40-year history. Feast on a plate of it along with your choice of coleslaw, fries, or mashed potatoes and gravy. $12.99 for a half chicken.

5. Build-Your-Own Burger at Caveman Burger

430 E. Bell Rd. | Deer Valley

Burger and fries

Start out with a 1/3-lb. Angus beef burger and fresh-baked bun, then top it with your choice of dozens of add-ons, from jalapenos and sriracha to habanero ketchup and fried duck egg. Or, switch out the patty for Arizona grass-fed beef, turkey, salmon, or a vegan bean burger. Starting at $7.25; some toppings extra.

6. Mile-High Pastrami at Chompie's

1160 E. University Dr. | Tempe

Ok, so it's not actually a mile high. But it's about as close as you can ask for from a sandwich. If you can, unhinge your jaw before you bite into this heap of hot pastrami, which is first baked with a secret blend of spices before being steamed and sliced to order. $10.99 for a jumbo half sandwich with coleslaw or potato salad.

7. Pierogi at All Pierogi Kitchen

1245 W. Baseline Rd. | Mesa

Pierogi platter with sausage

Each day All Pierogi Kitchen makes more than a dozen different flavors of its signature dish from scratch, from sauerkraut and mushrooms to farmer's cheese and potato. Order them alone or as part of platters with potato pancakes, smoked kielbasa, and stuffed cabbage rolls. Starting at $9 for a six-pierogi plate.

8. Haus Brat at Brat Haus

3622 N. Scottsdale Rd. | Scottsdale

It's hard to say if this sausage spiced with parsley, sage, and allspice is as outstanding as it seems or if everything just tastes better at one of the picnic tables on Brat Haus's excellent patio. Add toppings like sauerkraut, sweet onion jam, or dill relish for no extra charge. $9.50.

9. S.O.P. Pizza at Humble Pie

21050 N. Tatum Blvd. | Desert Ridge

Pizza

Roasted red peppers and caramelized onions add notes of sweetness to this 12-inch sausage pizza, which is made with both mozzarella and ricotta cheese. Use the money you save with our deal to order something off the nifty wine and cocktail list. $16.99 (feeds two).

10. Machaca Burrito at The Original Carolina's Mexican Food

1202 E. Mohave Ave. | Central City

We saved the best bargain on the list for last: four measly bucks gets you a hearty burrito at this local institution, a perennial favorite on lists of the best Mexican food in Phoenix. Customers especially love the version made with machaca, a salted, de- and re-hydrated beef that's popular in North Mexico, while the chewy, fresh-made tortillas draw plenty of praise themselves. $4.
