Groupon Student Success Initiative with Chicago State University

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month throughout February and beyond, we take this time to pause and reflect on our journey. It is an opportunity to honor the triumphs of generations of Blacks who’ve struggled tirelessly for their fundamental rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s also a time to bring about action in ways that truly matter.

At Groupon, we believe attracting and retaining global talent is key to our success.

We also believe that our Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program must help build and support an organization made up of individuals from various backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, including those who have been historically underrepresented.

Our company, like many companies, is trying to make a meaningful difference to mitigate and eradicate systemic disparities for Blacks as it relates to education and employment opportunities. In the article, How We are Honoring His Legacy, we spoke about how we are making strides with the Groupon Student Success Initiative.

The Groupon Student Success Initiative was created in partnership with Chicago State University, a predominantly Black university in Chicago. We’re establishing five scholarships for first-time, first-year undergraduate students. These students, our Groupon Scholars, will not only receive tuition and fees assistance but will be paired with a Groupon employee to provide mentorship during the school year.

The Groupon Student Success Initiative plays a key role within our overall DEI program and is focused specifically on driving more significant equity –  a central tenet of our DEI strategy. We aim to build a talent pipeline for the future. Therefore, our Groupon Scholars can participate in Groupon’s internship program as they become rising Juniors. We recognize there is a gap in educational opportunities and outcomes, and we want to do our part in helping level the playing field. Our relationship with Chicago State University is our first of many steps in that direction.
