With the advent of cartoon animation, symphonies reached both the masses and a new level of appreciation under the patronage of the great Bugs Bunny. Avoid Elmer Fudd's buckshot and score seats to the most melodic events of the season with today's Groupon: for $29, you get one dress-circle ticket to your choice of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Love Blooms or Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at Atlanta Symphony Hall. Prices for dress-circle seats for the select shows have up to a $60 value. You may purchase Groupons for each show but will have to choose your showtime and reserve your seats by May 11.
The 27-Grammys-and-counting ASO kicks off the middle of May with conductor Ludovic Morlot and the ASO performing Love Blooms, a concert that features such spring feverish favorites as Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no. 2 with Stephen Hough on the ivories and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Catch Love Blooms on Friday, May 14, 2010, at 8 p.m. or Sunday, May 16, 2010, at 3 p.m. On either Thursday, May 20, or Friday, May 21, at 8 p.m., symphony-goers can see conductor Oliver Knussen lead the ASO through Beethoven's immensely powerful Fifth Symphony. The well-known composition will accompany the debut of the maestro’s own musical adaptation of Walt Whitman's poetry and Schumann's Konzertstück, a vibrant showcase of the ASO horn section’s prowess.
With so many varied flavors of classical music represented, this transcendently tuneful twosome of concerts is a May activity the whole family can agree on (unlike the Hot Pockets vs. Lean Pockets debate, which remains a point of sore contention for many). Head to the handsome Atlanta Symphony Hall for a night of fairytale tunes and transcendent tones.
