What You'll Get
If the cruel temptations of the Play-Doh Fun Factory taught the world anything, it's that mouthwatering creations are more gratifying when they're actually edible. Swoop mouth-first onto a cold, peeled treat with today’s deal: for $5, you get $10 worth of frozen banana treats at Bananarchy on Lamar Boulevard. Today’s Groupon may be used over multiple visits.
Bananarchy operates on a deceptively simple principle: frozen bananas are dipped in the customer’s choice of 4 melted dippings, then coated in 1 of 11 delicious textured toppings. Dip your banana non-euphemistically in chocolate, vegan chocolate, peanut butter, or vanilla, and then coat it in one or more toppings, which range from M&Ms and Oreos to coconut, granola, toffee, and cinnamon. The result is a frozen treat perfect for gripping in a proletariat fist and for bombing one’s fascist innards with vitamin C. All bananas used by Bananarchy are fair-trade, unlike the bananas at Bananobjectivism, which are harvested directly from the hands of bawling, hungry babies. Prices usually range from $2.75 to $3.75 per treat, based on half or whole bananas, and specialty bananas can cost a bit more.
Whether Austinites are celebrating a summer of chaotic fun or trying to chicken-dance their career as a magician back to life, a frozen banana from Bananarchy gives them a big, yellow, potassium-rich finger with which to stick it to the Man. Treat some friends to a few frozen bananas and a whole lot of Arrested Development references with today’s Groupon to Bananarchy.
The Austin Chronicle named Bananarchy "Best Combined Force of Radical Politics and Bluth Family Homage" in its Best of Austin 2010 feature, and Texas Monthly also highlighted the banana stand. Nearly 70 Yelpers give it an average of 4.5 stars, and more than 760 Facebookers like the business.
- The self-described “revolutionary” dessert stand is perfect for these hot summer days with the kids...I’m definitely not waiting a whole year for another birthday to enjoy one of these babies. – Texas Monthly
- Mmmm... frozen banana covered with your choice of hard shell of chocolate, vanilla or PB, and rolled in your selected topping. Mmmm. – M B., Yelp, 8/15/09

Bananarchy operates on a deceptively simple principle: frozen, Turbana bananas are dipped in the customer’s choice of four melted dips and then coated in their choice of 11 toppings. Hundreds of combinations result. Patrons can opt for a wholesome snack, devouring a banana dipped in vegan chocolate and granola, or indulge in a satisfying dessert with a banana dipped in chocolate and coated with toffee, cookies, and M&M's.
In addition to offering a warm-weather alternative to snow cones or snowman tears, Bananarchy boasts a complex origin story that earned co-founder Laura Anderson a feature on McSweeney’s. In a Q&A session, she explains that the idea was inspired by the frozen banana stand on the TV show Arrested Development.
