What You'll Get

After spending a night dreaming of steel children and living motorcycles, it takes a superbly beaned brew to usher the brain back into reality. Escape sleep’s chimeras with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of espresso, tea, small bites, and more at Bird on a Wire Espresso, located near Fauntleroy Park. Tax is included in the cost of today’s deal.

A neighborhood institution for more than eight years, Bird on a Wire Espresso satisfies customers with a comprehensive menu of beverages complemented by a carefully edited selection of food. Five different roasts of Raven's Brew Coffee help the shop follow the time-honored tradition of turning beans into gold bullion and gold bullion into a delicious caffeinated beverage. The Bird also offers house-made chai tea ($2.75/12 oz.), cold-brewed Toddys ($2.58/12 oz.), and a number of other beanless options. Beat the heat with sun-brewed tea ($1.75) or a fruit-and-berry smoothie in flavors including banana, mixed berries, and orange juice ($3.50), preferable to a summer trip to the Antarctic. Fresh pastries from Macrina, Essential Baking Company, and Little Rae's Bakery bolster a breakfast menu that also includes egg sandwiches ($4.15–$5.65, depending on bread choice) and breakfast burritos ($3.50, add $0.55 for bacon), while chicken salad and slow-cooked pork sliders ($3.50, or two for $6) help lunchtime visitors minimize their bites-to-sandwich ratio.

Bird on a Wire's outdoor seating allows guests to enjoy their orders while shouting political slogans at passing butterflies. Adding to the potable pleasures, happy hour ensues from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with the shop expanding its drink menu to include beer and wine (all patrons must be at least 21 years old to participate). Whether perking up with caffeine or winding down with wine, Bird on a Wire serves as an ideal venue for flocking with friends, flying with high-rolling caffeine kingpins, or whittling away at an epic novel while periodically screaming about an ongoing existential crisis.
