About Instinct Defense Academy

The Bujinkan method is a system composed of nine distinct family martial traditions, some of which are more than 1,000 years old. The system, which is also known as ninjutsu, focuses on both personal development and defense techniques designed to protect one's family and oneself. Masaaki Hatsumi is the grandmaster of the Bujinkan Hombu dojo in Noda, Japan, and one of his students, Peter Kramer, carries on age-old traditions as the head instructor at Bujinkan Family Dojo.

Now a 15th-degree black belt, Kramer was initially inspired to study martial arts after moving from California to the island of Tahiti at age 8. His bullying classmates treated him like an outsider, thereby fueling his passion and need for self-defense skills. He studied several forms of martial arts, eventually gravitating toward the holistic approach of Bujinkan. He or one of his fellow instructors serves as a mentor to each student who joins the dojo, welcoming him or her to the Bujinkan "family" and taking their picture for the family holiday card.
