Dance can express what words cannot, whether it's the triumphant joy in a football player's posttouchdown pirouette or the passionate tango used to notify roommates that the basement is flooding. Transmit tidings with twinkling toes thanks to today’s Groupon: for $22, you get a five-week session of beginning jitterbug dance classes at Coul Swing (a $45 value). Classes are held Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Lodge Hall in Winston-Salem.
Coul Swing induces hoof-jostling with weekly swing dance classes in various styles tailored to ability level. Beginning jitterbug covers the thorax-swirling gamut from the Lindy Hop to Carolina Shag, introducing first-timers to the world of early 20th-century dance and helping those with previous experience brush up for visits to their local speakeasies. Jitterbug courses help tenderfoots lead and follow, hone their rhythm-reading, and map the cuts of the six-count jitterbug.
Teaching together since 1998, Coul Swing instructors Jennifer and David Coulombe entertain as well as they instruct, and provide a laid-back and humor-embroidered learning environment. Combining Jen’s classical training in ballet and jazz with her experience as an exercise physiologist and David’s background in tae kwon do and volleyball, the duo calls upon their extensive knowledge of bodies and movement to help even the double-left-footed find the tiny dancer living inside their solar plexus.
