The 500 RYT teacher training is a three-part program consisting of two training sessions and a hands-on teaching period in between. The certification requires that students have completed a 200 RYT training already, although anyone can apply to take the course. The first session focuses on revisiting and mastering the fundamentals learned during 200-hour training, while the second session explores yogic philosophy, advanced practice of asanas, and developing your own unique style of teaching. Between the two sessions, you will participate in practicum peer review: you will lead three public classes, which will be videotaped and shared online with your peers for feedback. You will also be expected to give feedback on seven of your peers' classes. Program founder James Brown serves as a mentor to participants, and consults with them privately before and after each class. Upon completing your training, you will be eligible to register as a 500 RYT with Yoga Alliance. Read more about the training here.

The program was developed by Brown, a nationally renowned instructor and lead teacher at YogaPoser in Los Angeles. Since he started teaching in 1997, he became a top student of YogaWorks founder Maty Ezraty, and helped develop the studio's teacher-training program. He has been the personal instructor to Vice President Al Gore's family and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and is currently a yoga columnist for The Huffington Post. He will be leading both of the teacher-training sessions. Read more about James here.

The entire training will be held at Epic Yoga. The first sessions runs from August 12–23; the second session is held November 4–16. For both sessions, the trainings are held Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

About Epic Yoga Classes and Yoga Teacher-Certification with James Brown

Not long ago, Emma Saal led the life of a rather typical urban twentysomething. The recent University of Maryland grad was living in Dupont Circle, spending her days as the assistant to a real-estate developer and her nights as a cocktail waitress. Though she knew she wanted to, she wasn't exactly sure how to snap out of her status-quo lifestyle—until a friend brought her to a bikram yoga class. She felt an instant attraction to the practice, and didn't hesitate to enroll in a 200-hour teaching program. She taught all over DC and then in Miami, eventually returning home to open her own studio, Epic Yoga.

Though it was Emma's dream, Epic Yoga certainly isn't a one-woman show. She has brought together a large, diverse team of instructors who are inspired by a seemingly endless parade of activities: there are rugby players and IronMan triathletes, surfers and scuba divers, fire dancers and ballerinas. They bring their unique perspectives to a broad range of classes that generally accommodate students of all levels. Traditional sessions of vinyasa and bikram share studio space with fusion practices such as barre yoga, a combination of ballet, cardio, and Pilates; and red sun yoga, which incorporates martial arts techniques, including learning how to karate-chop a yoga mat in two.
