While navigating the urban landscape, you might have to scramble over a Cadillac Escalade to escape roving hotdog carts. Get a leg up on traversing the world's obstacles with today's Groupon: for $9, you get a day pass plus shoe rental at First Avenue Rocks.
The downtown climbery boasts nearly 4,000 square feet of climbing space. Walls designed to mimic the sandstone boulders of the Deep South have been specially engineered for ropeless bouldering climbs. And more than 100 routes, on bright knob-covered walls of multiple angles up to 15 feet high, are available to sate any insatiable scaler. Each climbing station is surrounded by up to 16 inches of plush padding, enough to cushion any unforeseen tumble or gentle drift down to inspect a stray jelly bean. For the fearful first climbers, First Avenue boasts a small space dedicated exclusively to top-rope climbing. Climbing-shoe rental is included in this deal.
Though challenging to master, rock climbing is a relatively easy sport to learn. Veteran climbers say rock climbing is sort of like training and running a marathon, but you get the adrenaline rush in shorter, more intensely concentrated spurts. Not only does climbing tone muscles and increase their mass, it also can increase flexibility and focus. So spend a day formally introducing yourself to rocks, and emerge empowered and emboldened to rescue tree-bound kittens and gutter-lodged Frisbees.
